Job Summary
POSITION OVERVIEW:
- Enforce all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
- Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
- Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Community Center Staff Manual.
- Working knowledge of community center policies, procedures, programs, and services.
- Supervise building staff and assist in assigning staff to locations within the program area.
- Assist building staff with monitoring of the facility and other administrative duties, as assigned.
- Maintain constant surveillance of the assigned area.
- Implement Emergency Procedures (per MPS Recreation policy), as needed.
- Effectively communicate with participants/patrons, Recreation Supervisors, Part-Time Recreation Staff, Building Engineers, and Principals, or designees (where applicable).
- Operate a security walk-through and hand-held metal detector.
- Ensure program areas are free of hazards and in a condition that is conducive to safe programming.
- Remain alert, free of distractions, and diffuse situations before they escalate.
- Cooperate with other staff to clean designated facility areas by following all health and safety regulations.
- Other duties and projects assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor at his/her assigned Twilight Center.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- 21 years of age or older.
- Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
- Access to reliable transportation.
- Completion of Crisis Prevention/Intervention training or ability to complete within 30 days of hire.
- Able to lift to 40lbs continuously.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Previous work experience in a public setting with a diverse population.
- 3-5 years of progressive experience supervising teens and adults.
- 3-5 years of experience managing program or service operation.
- Experience working with large groups independently.
- CPR/First Aid training/certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, and staff.
- Ability to foster positive working relationships.
- Ability to relate to and empathize with teen issues and de-escalate conflicts.
- Excellent decision-making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to delegate job duties as needed.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possibly loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or in a similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within the parameters of the training provided).
