Overall Job Summary This role is responsible for establishing the multi-year strategic direction of the Petsense website including the systemic platform, the design, the content, and the categories / brands / products represented and sold online. Responsibilities include financial accountability of the website and the products relating to sales, margin, and inventory performance. This role will work closely with Merchandising, Marketing, Finance, and IT in all aspects of the business to create a best-in-class website for Petsense. The role manages the third-party vendors who platform the website and any additional resources utilized to support the site. It is important the individual in this role understand the impact the website experience can have for all online sales, margin, and customer acquisition and, ultimately, to these metrics for the overall company.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)
Act as Project Manager to develop, plan and oversee a strategic 3 to 5-year e-Commerce business plan
Oversee the merchandise sold on-line and financial accountability for sales, gross margin dollars/rate and inventory performance
Develop a multi-year plan that supports a long tail of products to support endless aisle concept
Develop / oversee structured content that is consistent for all products represented online
Prioritize the opportunities for unstructured content such as training videos, educational pages, pet parent support pages, etc.
Act as the Merchant point of contact for vendor-supported brand landing pages, promotional planning, and structured content
Serve as primary point of contact for vendor partners for assortment planning, promotional planning, partnership management and business initiatives
Lead and develop a small team (1–2 direct reports and/or contract resources) to execute e-commerce merchandising priorities, ensuring alignment to strategic objectives, timelines, and performance expectations. Provide day-to-day direction and mentorship to internal and external partners, fostering accountability, cross‑functional collaboration, and continuous improvement in digital execution.
Identify and prioritize vendor drop ship to add items to website
Ensure strategic in-store events are reflected on the website
Work closely store merchandising management in attending shows, vendor meetings and divisional meetings
Support the incorporation and functionality of in-store services such as grooming, pet training, and mobile vet clinics on the website
Ensure best‑in‑class SEO and SEM
Work closely with Marketing to ensure seamless transition (look & feel) of Petsense branding throughout the website
Work closely with IT to manage and oversee ecommerce roadmap and project plans
Provide strategy and tactical execution of e-commerce merchandising initiatives for selected lines of business
Plan and merchandise products on the website and in all promotional channels for selected lines of business with appropriate operational execution and business analysis to ensure sales and margin objectives are attained
Drive promotional marketing calendar creation and execution on websites and in marketing channels
Manage everyday and promo price loading and verification – including MAP compliance
Communicate effectively to all levels of the company on the e-commerce vision & strategy to vendors and internal team
Conduct competitive analysis to determine opportunities for assortment growth and pricing and report out on findings to the merchandising team
Remain up to date and relevant to industry and competition trends in order to provide strategic direction on website
Pull, prepare, and analyze reports from all available sources to manage and report on business
Required Qualifications Experience: 6+ years of merchandising experience and experience working within a Shopify-based e-commerce environment preferred; comparable platform experience considered.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
Ability to enforce policies and procedures
Ability to write policies, procedures, and executive summaries
Proficiency in Microsoft and Office products
E-commerce basics: SEO, UX, UI
Ability to manipulate data to drive and expedite project analyses and completion
Ability to work overtime and travel when needed
Working Conditions
