Job Summary The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. The MA delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the plan of care, assists with basic health‑care needs including daily living activities—such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, recording vital signs, and providing psycho‑social support—to residents. The MA may assist residents with transferring, re‑positioning, and walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment, and may provide range‑of‑motion and passive exercises. The MA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience. The MA may also assist residents with meals and snacks; provide water and supplements as appropriate.

Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations. Documents outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicates changing conditions, medication follow‑up, and care‑related concerns/responses to the charge nurse. Collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational. Provides assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and encourages residents to participate. May participate in departmental or organization committees and task forces as needed.

Responsibilities Administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse; obtain vital signs; assist with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and transferring using appropriate techniques; assist residents with food preparation and dining; document all care and medication administration; provide housekeeping and laundry assistance; encourage resident participation in wellness and recreational programs; communicate changing conditions and concerns to the charge nurse; collect non‑invasive specimens; participate in committees as required.

Qualifications High school graduate or GED preferred but not required. Minimum age of 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.

Certifications & State Requirements

Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course.

Minnesota: Nursing assistant certification, completion of a 75‑hour course, registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, and the state‑approved Trained Medication Assistant course.

North Dakota: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course; Medication Assistant I for assisted living/basic care facilities, Medication Assistant II for skilled nursing facilities.

South Dakota: Completion of the state‑approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course and CMA certification.

All Good Samaritan and Sanford nursing facilities: State‑required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA); active certified nursing assistant registration in the state of practice or ability to obtain registration within 120 days.
