About the Role:
The Activity Therapist plays a vital role in enhancing the mental and emotional well‑being of patients through structured therapeutic activities. This position focuses on designing, implementing, and evaluating individualized activity programs that promote socialization, cognitive function, and physical health. The therapist collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that activities align with patients' treatment goals and support their recovery journey. By fostering a supportive and engaging environment, the Activity Therapist helps patients develop coping skills, improve self‑esteem, and achieve greater independence. Ultimately, this role contributes significantly to the holistic care approach, improving overall patient outcomes within the behavioral health setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/GED required; B.S. Degree in Behavioral Sciences preferred. C.A.C. One‑year experience in an alcohol and drug treatment setting with direct patient contact preferred.
Must be able to walk, run, bend, and stand continuously for approximately 3–4 hours per 8‑hour shift.
Must be able to see at 20/40 corrected in each eye and hear (hearing aid acceptable).
Must have a valid Alabama driver's license and a safe driving record. Must transport patients in a company van and help a handicapped patient in and out of the van.
Must be capable of administering CPR and be certified, and have knowledge of first aid.
Maintain records and have good communication skills.
Must be emotionally and physically capable of functioning under stressful situations.
Must have good documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in a residential treatment center, behavioral health or psychiatric facility.
Training in trauma‑informed care or cognitive‑behavioral therapy techniques.
Proficiency in documenting patient progress using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Essential Functions
Design, coordinate and direct the patient's activity periods to allow daily structured group exercise and reduce fraternization.
Order/purchase new equipment and supplies for the department.
Maintain equipment and playing field construction, volleyball court, weight room, shuffleboard court, and all other activity equipment as instructed.
Assist on the challenge course.
Assist with paperwork/documentation.
Provide relief for the Senior Activity Therapist’s day off.
Obtain medical clearances for patients to participate in activities and the challenge course.
Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness to perform the job safely.
Must be able to work in a cooperative manner with co‑workers, managers, clients, and prospective clients.
Other duties as assigned.
