Animal Care Specialist – Petco

Position Overview As an Operations Specialist in Animal Care, you will ensure proper animal care and husbandry for all companion animals and aquatic life in Pet Care Centers (PCC). You will support the PCC’s sales and shrink goals, oversee merchandising and inventory strategies, and partner with the sales team to meet guest and pet needs. Passion for animal welfare and a positive teamwork mindset are essential for success.

Position Responsibilities

Maintain high standards of animal care and husbandry for companion animals and aquatic life.

Complete companion animal incident reports and hourly health checks as required.

Process register transactions to create a great guest experience.

Support guest interactions within our selling model.

Stock, price, and display merchandise to maintain a compelling presentation.

Apply training programs to maintain expertise and educate other PCC partners in animal care and maintenance.

Promote a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.

Adhere to operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Refer guest inquiries to the Leader on Duty as needed.

Serve as the primary resource for animal education and care for guests and partners.

Order companion animals, aquatic life, supplies, and merchandise to maximize sales, margin, and inventory.

Analyze inventory data and recommend improvements.

Perform routine housekeeping tasks to maintain the appearance of animal habitats and aquatic areas.

Document proper handling and disposition of relinquished and adoption animals.

Verify completion of maintenance tasks per the Maintenance Schedules.

Participate in physical inventory counts of animal and aquatic life.

Follow safety and loss prevention procedures.

Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Other Essential Duties

Utilize selling behaviors to enhance the guest experience.

Maintain a safe environment for partners, guests, and pets.

Contribute to a collaborative culture focused on pet health and wellness.

Engage in career development programs to support continued growth.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum one year of experience caring for companion animals and aquatic life.

High level of knowledge of companion animals and aquatic life with an aptitude for sales techniques.

Professional appearance, demeanor, and genuine interest in animal care.

Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency in mathematics and basic accounting.

Certification Completion and ongoing maintenance of the Petco Animal Care Certification program are required.

Education/Skills High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.

Supervisory Responsibility

Ensure the Pet Care Center opens and closes per established policies.

Adhere to and promote safety procedures.

Work Environment Job duties are primarily indoor; occasional guest carryouts and veterinary visits may require brief outdoor exposure. The role requires frequent bending, kneeling, lifting merchandise up to 50 pounds, and standing for extended periods. A flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, is essential.

Salary Range Salary Range:

$17.00 – $25.00 per hour Start Rate:

$18.00 per hour
