The role As a Business Development Representative in Kansas you will be part of a multi-functional team underwriting and managing both new and existing relationships with independent agents and brokers to produce new account opportunities for the organization focusing on workers' compensation policies at the mid‑market business level. You will direct much of your attention on growing SFM’s footprint in Kansas, but you will also support the existing book of business within the state of Kansas. Your goal will be to showcase SFM as an insurer of choice and you will be the acting underwriter with authority when working on renewals and new business. Developing and maintaining agency/broker relationships is key to achieving success along with meeting new business goals and retention of renewals. This a fully remote position and you will work with customers in Kansas; it is preferred applicants live in or around the KS City metro area, Topeka, Lawrence and or Wichita.
What You Will Be Doing
Establishes new agency partner relationships and works to increase new applications for workers’ compensation insurance policies within the assigned territory.
Meets regularly with new and existing key agents and those identified as high potential to build relationships and collects competitive intelligence on other carriers.
Fosters and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
Develops and executes marketing strategies to promote the Company's products to brokers and agents.
Monitors market trends and competition to identify opportunities for product enhancements and marketing strategies.
Organizes and participates in marketing initiatives, including presentations, industry events, and broker/agent meetings to showcase products and services.
Educates agents about the benefits of standalone workers’ compensation programs and performs reviews on existing account programs and identifies the needs/wants from the agency. Quantifies agents’ performance and proactively works to improve agency performance.
Facilitates services, such as claims reviews and loss prevention meetings, with SFM prospects and policyholders.
Evaluates and analyzes new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite. Collaborates with agents, brokers and clients to obtain necessary information and clarify details.
Partners with internal business partners, such as loss prevention, premium audit and actuaries to effectively underwrite a profitable book business to ensure exposures are thoroughly evaluated when making mid-term policy changes and reviewing renewals.
Maintains and monitors entire underwriting book of business to achieve premium volume and loss ratios consistent with company goals and objectives.
Provides premier customer service to all customers and complies with customer service standards. Responds promptly to resolve complaints or problems. Adheres to partnership agreements with business service teams.
What We’ll Love About You
Bachelor’s degree in insurance, finance, risk management, marketing, business or related field; in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, or 4 years of suitable work experience will be accepted.
Four or more years’ experience in a sales/marketing role, preferably in the field of insurance.
Experience underwriting commercial property/casualty insurance policy’s, preferred.
Agency experience is a plus.
Professional insurance designations (CPCU, CIC, ARM) is a plus.
Excellent marketing skills and firm understanding as to how to develop new business.
Demonstrated success underwriting commercial property/casualty insurance is preferred.
Strong working knowledge of state applicable Workers’ Compensation rules and regulations is a plus.
Knowledge of insurance rating, structure, forms, and coverages.
Demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit.
Strong math skills to calculate and evaluate policy premiums and loss ratios.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with ability to deliver superior customer service.
Ability to manage difficult conversations with diplomacy and tact.
Develops and maintains knowledge of company policies and industry laws and regulations
Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
High-level interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills, including the ability to affirmatively close sales.
Able to travel with occasional overnight travel.
Strong computer skills (preferably in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Familiarity with digital marketing strategies and tools is beneficial.
Strong time‑management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and effective dates.
Must be able to work independently and with a team.
Valid drivers license.
Physical Requirements Work takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office setting or home office setting, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopies, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors with little to no exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions. Travel as needed.
