Position Overview A Foreman is responsible for the safe and productive layout, assembly, and installation of underground utilities and natural gas projects for the company. This position directly supervises a crew of 2-5 employees and fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies, safety standards, and applicable local, state and federal requirements. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Functions
Supervise natural gas crew in the safe installation and assembly of all aspects of underground utilities and natural gas projects, rendering hands‑on assistance.
Prioritize and manage safety and quality expectations in the field.
Read and interpret plans to understand layout, sequencing, and method of pipe installation.
Maintain all paperwork as directed including timesheets, as‑builts or service cards, daily production reports, traceability documentation, and customer pay sheets.
Train crew members in accordance with company safety policies to ensure a safe work environment that complies with OSHA/OQ standards.
Serve as single point of contact with customers, inspectors, subcontractors, and vendors performing work in the field.
Inspect work in progress and completed work to ensure conformance to specifications and local codes; responsible for the overall quality of the finished product.
Monitor progress of crew to keep project completion in line with the overall construction schedule and cost estimate.
Study project specifications with the superintendent to plan procedures for pipe installation.
Operate assigned heavy equipment to excavate, install and backfill utility infrastructure projects.
Use specialized instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels for verification of proper grade of pipe and structure installation.
Pre‑survey job location and make calls to utility companies to locate utilities.
Conduct job‑site orientation; lead, train, and mentor all employees.
Secure work site at the end of each shift to ensure public safety and security of equipment and materials.
Follow all federal, state, and company environmental policies.
Maintain a professional attitude with owners, inspectors, public, and company personnel.
Supervisor may assign other duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications / Special Knowledge Skills
Efficient at operating heavy equipment (excavators, loaders, etc.).
Strong knowledge regarding operations, safety, and maintenance of equipment.
Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, safety, and quality standards, and effectively utilize all tools and equipment relevant to the work.
Detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
Direct work and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of coworkers.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Problem‑solving abilities.
Strong sense of personal responsibility.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Education Preferred: High school diploma or GED. Any vocational training is strongly desired.
Experience Required A minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising the installation of underground natural gas utilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: Five (5) years of field experience as a foreman supervising the installation of underground natural gas utilities.
Physical Requirements
Able and willing to work long hours, including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
Ability to travel to project sites typically within a 4‑hour radius of the home office.
Able to work in outside environments subject to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
