About the Role
Karbone is seeking a motivated Legal Counsel to support our energy trading, origination and environmental commodities business. This position is based in New York, NY and will report to the General Counsel. This is a hands‑on, business‑facing position where you will have direct exposure to transactions across physical and financial power, capacity, RECs, carbon, renewable fuels and other environmental products.
Responsibilities
Draft, review, and negotiate master trading agreements, credit support arrangements, transaction confirmations, NDAs, and other commercial contracts.
Redline terms, propose alternatives, and balance commercial objectives with legal risk.
Identify and manage legal risk across commercial and trading relationships.
Provide light‑touch oversight and legal support on regulatory issues relevant to the business (e.g., CFTC, FERC) where relevant.
Work with Middle Office operations on adherence to internal policies and market rules.
Requirements
2+ years of relevant legal experience including experience negotiating, reviewing, revising, drafting and negotiating contracts.
Law degree from an accredited law school.
Experience working with physical and financial energy commodities (Power, Capacity, Environmental Products, Renewable Fuels, etc.) highly preferred.
Understanding of master trading documentation (such as ISDA, EEI, etc.) and knowledge of core regulatory frameworks for derivatives and energy markets (FERC, CFTC, Dodd‑Frank, RTOs/ISOs, etc.) preferred but not required.
Exceptional written communication skills and strong attention to detail.
The estimated base salary for this position is estimated to be between $135,000 and $185,000, depending on experience. Total compensation includes comprehensive benefits and bonus eligibility.
