Mechanical Engineer, HVAC (Facilities)
at SpaceX — Facility Engineering team, Vandenberg Space Force Base. You will oversee design, construction and operations of HVAC systems that are critical to production and launch. You will be accountable for overseeing existing system performance and modifications, new system design and construction, company-wide specifications and compliance, capital project management, and preventative maintenance efforts. Responsibilities
Lead and/or contribute to design of HVAC systems for various facilities: office, hangar, rocket, and customer payload environmental control systems Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports Air conditioning cooling load calculations, heat loss calculations following ASHRAE standards Design HVAC systems to comply with ANSI/ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, 90.1 Implement and execute HVAC system commissioning in compliance with ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Standard 202 Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information Research and analyze design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make maintenance recommendations Develop mechanical and controls design of products using drafting tools or CAD software Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure machines and equipment are installed and functioning to specifications Conduct research that tests and analyzes feasibility, design, operation, and performance of equipment and systems Recommend design modifications to eliminate malfunctions and develop/test models of alternate designs Estimate costs and submit bids for engineering, construction, or extraction projects and prepare contract documents Establish and coordinate maintenance and safety procedures, service schedules, and material supply for machines and equipment Study industrial processes to determine where and how equipment can be applied Use fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer knowledge to design tubing and piping systems Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or other engineering discipline 2+ years of professional experience with HVAC system design, environmental sensors/components, industrial system monitoring, and/or data collection systems Preferred Skills And Experience
Professional experience with clean-room system design and maintenance Professional experience with energy modeling and HVAC load calculations Experience with design, sizing, specification and installation of HVAC chillers, pumps, boilers, air handlers, heat pumps, HEPA filtration and building automation Familiarity with HVAC/facility monitoring hardware and software Intermediate level experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software Additional Requirements
Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Vandenberg Space Force Base Ability to travel to other SpaceX project sites to support work Willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch and critical project timelines Willing to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, wind, open ocean Work performed in an environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise Compensation And Benefits
Pay range: Mechanical Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year Mechanical Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, education, and experience Base salary is part of SpaceX total rewards package, with potential for long-term incentives, stock options, discretionary bonuses, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage; 401(k) retirement plan; disability and life insurance; paid parental leave; paid vacation and holidays; paid sick leave per company policy ITAR Requirements
