Job Summary The respiratory therapist is a healthcare professional employed to perform all respiratory care diagnostic and therapeutic procedures provided by the Department of Respiratory Care. They should be energetic and motivated to support the success of a growing service. The respiratory therapist should refer to supervisory personnel in any doubtful situation.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements Essential duties include:
Demonstrate the ability to relate to coworkers professionally and respectfully, ensuring a culture of safety.
Perform all respiratory-related therapeutic and diagnostic maneuvers in accordance with established policies.
Implement and assess the function of oxygen and therapeutic gases.
Ensure proper set-up and implementation of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Provide aerosolized medication, CPT and IPV.
Set up and monitor ventilators in accordance with department and hospital policies.
Communicate with peers and staff to develop and improve inter- and intradepartmental services.
Perform CPR and diagnostic procedures including ABG analysis, pulse oximetry, and nitric oxide studies.
Assess and re‑assess patients for therapy, monitoring vital signs, breath sounds, oxygen requirements, sputum characteristics, and other observations.
Respond to critical areas (e.g., ER, OR, Code) and perform routine checks on the Life Support Unit.
Assist with bronchoscopy, minor cardiopulmonary invasive or surgical procedures, and tracheotomy care.
Perform bedside studies and pulmonary function tests, interpret complex lab data, and provide input in patient care decisions.
Assist in prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia and perform all other aspects of Respiratory Care per policies.
Attend monthly department meetings, in‑services, and other required meetings.
Maintain accurate records, follow safety and infection control policies, practice universal precautions, and report risk management concerns.
Provide service excellence by explaining therapy to patients and being courteous to patients, families, visitors, and co‑workers.
Job Specifications
Minimum Education: Graduate of an AMA approved school; Respiratory Therapy preferred.
Minimum Experience: Leadership skills desirable.
Required Registry or License: Registered with the N.B.R.C and licensed in Missouri within 6 months of hire.
Independent Action: Must demonstrate the ability to provide high quality therapy skills with moderate supervision and make independent decisions.
Pressure of Work: Capable of long hours of walking and standing, handling hazardous gases, and responding quickly in emergencies.
Work‑Checking Conditions: Regular exposure to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, hazardous anesthetic agents, and electrical hazards.

Physical Requirements
Heavy physical effort: lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Prolonged standing and walking
Lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients

Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching as required
Vision Requirements Ability to adjust vision for varying degrees of room light.
Required Professional License and Certifications
Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA)
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
Respiratory Care Practitioner – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
