Avondale Veterinary Group, Strathaven - Small animal, Strathaven, Scotland We’re looking for an enthusiastic, team-focused Veterinary Surgeon to join our small animal team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, providing maternity cover on a part-time basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to become part of a supportive and developing practice, with a role that offers a rewarding mix of consulting and surgery.

We’re passionate about creating a happy, inclusive, and supportive working environment where everyone feels valued. This role would suit a vet who enjoys all aspects of general practice and is committed to delivering high-quality patient care. As a training practice for the next generation of RVNs, we strongly believe in a whole-team approach and take pride in supporting learning, collaboration, and professional development.

Ideally we are looking to cover 20 hours per week. The working pattern includes Fridays as a set working day, with flexibility to work either Tuesday or Thursday, plus a 1 in 6 Saturday morning rota. Typical hours are 08:00–18:00 on Tuesday/Thursday, 08:00–19:00 on Fridays, and 08:30–12:00 on Saturdays (averaged across the rota). We value work–life balance and are open to discussing flexibility around the rota where possible.

Purpose-Built for Exceptional Care Avondale Vets is a purpose-built practice based at the Strathaven Rural Centre since 2009, with a proud history and a strong community presence. We’re a close-knit, inclusive team that values camaraderie, reflected in regular social events and local community involvement.

Our facilities are well equipped to support high clinical standards, including digital and dental radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, in-house laboratory facilities, and laparoscopic surgery (with trained vets). We’re also expanding our in-house orthopaedic offering, including TPLO.

Our People Are at the Heart You’ll be joining a supportive, forward-thinking small animal team made up of 4 full-time and 1 part-time vets, alongside a skilled nursing team of HVN, RVNs, SVN, and ACA.

Clinical development is strongly encouraged, with support from our experienced Small Animal Clinical Director (13+ years at Avondale) and vets currently undertaking postgraduate certificates in Surgery/Orthopaedics and Cardiology. Collaboration, mentorship, and progression are central to our culture.

Life in Strathaven Strathaven is a charming South Lanarkshire market town offering a great balance of countryside living and city access. With excellent schools, a strong community feel, and Glasgow just a short drive away, it’s an ideal location for both work and lifestyle.
