River Vista Behavioral Health – Certified Recreation/Activity Therapist (CTRS) River Vista Behavioral Health is a new 128-bed facility overlooking the San Joaquin River, providing advanced behavioral health services. The hospital employs over 250 staff, including clinicians, nurses, mental health technicians, support staff, and administration.

Responsibilities

Plan and implement activity services for assigned program, defining and achieving treatment goals as part of the interdisciplinary treatment team.

Provide continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients.

Observe and document changes in patients' appearance, behavior, and ability to work toward treatment plan goals, and communicate these changes to Charge Nurse or Program Coordinator.

Document services rendered in daily progress notes, ensuring compliance with established criteria.

Effectively plan and implement activity therapy for assigned patient caseload within the facility and outside as required.

Maintain therapeutic space, supplies, and equipment; keep them clean, orderly, and safe.

Use crisis intervention techniques and assist patients in achieving optimal independent functioning.

Provide direction, education, and in‑service to other unit personnel regarding activity therapy.

Participate in performance improvement activities, such as conferences or seminars.

Adhere to facility, department, and corporate personnel policies and procedures, attend mandatory in‑services, and support quality improvement goals.

Maintain confidentiality of facility employees and patient information.

Support facility-wide quality/performance improvement goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Music, Recreation Therapy, Humanities, Social Work, or a related therapeutic discipline.

Experience: One year of related experience with psychiatric patient care techniques and understanding of mental illness.

Licensure: Certified Recreation/Activity Therapist (CTRS) certification or licensure required.

Additional Requirements: CPR certification and "Handle with Care" training (to be obtained during orientation).

Standards of Performance

Demonstrate responsibility for observation and sound judgment in patients’ physical and mental needs.

Observe and document changes in patients’ appearance, behavior, and ability to work toward treatment plan goals.

Communicate changes in patient’s condition to Charge Nurse or Program Coordinator.

Provide assessment in psychosocial / leisure therapeutic skills development or deficiency within 72 hours.

Ensure timely documentation of interventions based on the patient’s plan of care.

Apply appropriate crisis intervention techniques when required.

Assist patients in achieving optimum level of independent functioning.

Maintain current documentation in daily progress notes, including patient name, date of therapy, therapeutic group/intervention, and session summary.

Demonstrate excellent guest relations, assist patients, licensed practitioners, co‑workers, and visitors promptly and courteously.

Act as a patient advocate and assure patient rights are upheld.

Report therapeutic service charges daily, substantiating changes.

Attend program meetings and maintain related records.

Provide education and in‑service to unit personnel on activity therapy.

Participate in performance improvement activities.

Utilize time constructively, delegate duties as appropriate, and demonstrate good judgment.

Adhere to facility, department, and corporate policies and procedures.

Attend all mandatory facility in‑services and staff development activities.

Support quality improvement goals and objectives.

Maintain confidentiality of staff and patient information.

Teaching

Model and teach appropriate social skills.

Teach coping skills and stress management techniques to patients.

Carry out teaching activities identified in the treatment plan.

Treatment Planning

Provide feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team regarding patient response to therapy.

Contribute to treatment plan with specific goals and interventions to be achieved.

Complete Master Treatment Plan within 72 hours of admission with patient’specific goals and interventions listed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of psychiatric care techniques.

Knowledge in one or more program disciplines (art, recreation, and/or music therapy).

Knowledge of assaultive behavior management techniques.

Thorough knowledge and training in CPR.

Knowledge of all code procedures.

Knowledge of adolescent and adult program rules and protocols.

Physical, Mental, and Special Demands

Ability to stand, sit, or walk up to six hours; sit for up to two hours.

Ability to move frequently during patient care.

Visual acuity needed for reading charts and demonstrating activities.

Ability to spend 20% of work day outdoors in temperatures 30–100°F and 80% indoors in temperatures 60–85°F.

Ability to occasionally push or pull wheeled carts up to 200 lbs.

Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 10 lbs; occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.

Ability to reach above, at, or below shoulder height; kneel, bend, stoop, turn, twist.

Ability to handle small objects with fine manipulations.

Ability to operate a van safely.

Ability to see well enough to read written material and discern a variety of odors.

Ability to occasionally handle hazardous/infectious waste.

Ability to work in high noise level environment, use chemicals, and handle mechanical hazards.

Additional Requirements Strong knowledge of The Joint Commission, HCFA, OSHA regulations, patient rights standards, and all other applicable federal and state laws governing mental health care facilities.
