Responsibilities
Perform routine respiratory therapy including aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, bronchodilator therapy, and chest physiotherapy. Set up mechanical ventilators and monitor patient response per Respiratory Care Department Manual. Explain procedures to patients, address fears, and secure cooperation. Perform ABG puncture and analysis, basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting, review Quality Control, notify critical values per blood gas policy, and maintain equipment and records. Experienced RTs may perform delegated supervisory duties such as reviewing competencies, blood gas results, QC logs, trends, corrective actions, error logs, advanced troubleshooting, and act as a quality assurance resource.
Participate in basic life support (airway, CPR, manual resuscitator) and advanced life support (emergency intubation when certified). Maintain equipment and supplies, adhere to infection control protocols, and ensure asepsis. Demonstrate clinical competence in respiratory care across all ages, understanding growth and developmental needs, and interpret patient data. Attend professional meetings and seminars (2½ departmental meetings for full‑time employees) and accurately document all care, logs, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience: 1 year preferred; new graduates considered. Education: Graduate of an AMA‑approved program in Respiratory Care.
Licenses/Certifications: NYS Licensed Respiratory Therapist; new hires must obtain RRT within 6 months. Other required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP within 90 days; S.T.A.B.L.E. within 1 year.
