Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in social services and crisis management.

Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to maintain professional and personal boundaries and resolve conflicts.

Basic computer skills.

Availability for 11:00pm-7:00am shifts; multiple shifts may be available.

Reliable transportation.

Preferred: knowledge of community resources, issues affecting individuals experiencing homelessness, and emergency medical procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities Security Duties

Maintain the safety and security of residents and the facility.

Complete building checks at stipulated times (each hour), including doors, rooms, alarms, emergency exits, etc., and document completion.

Ensure an active presence in the building by conducting required house checks, dining room checks, playroom and teen room checks, and a walk‑through of the building.

Intervene to protect residents from injuring themselves or others per policy.

Ensure outside individuals have permission to be on property; document visitors in the visitor log.

Full understanding of emergency procedures: fire evacuation, gas and electricity shut‑off, power failure protocol, etc.

Distribute incoming mail according to agency policy.

Keep staff workspace clean and organized.

Remain at post until relieved; brief incoming staff on pertinent information; may assist in staff coverage.

De‑escalate potentially volatile situations between residents as necessary.

Maintain telephone coverage during shift; monitor security cameras.

Interact professionally and maintain appropriate boundaries with residents, employees, visitors and guests.

Follow all agency policies and procedures.

Document all shelter activities and happenings during the shift in logs.

Adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook and departmental procedure manuals.

Be open‑minded to change within the work environment.

Work a minimum of one shift per month to continue employment.

Resident Services Specialist Duties

Supervise residents during the assigned shift and enforce all regulations in the resident handbook.

Assist residents in adjusting to their stay; direct them to appropriate support staff.

Supervise residents’ activities in the shelter for daily chores, sign‑ins and sign‑outs, meal times, play‑room and teen activity rooms; ensure residents are on time and in bed on time; monitor curfew times.

Read and initial shift reports and daily logs; complete required paperwork.

Maintain confidentiality of residents' files and logs.

Obtain verification from residents for employment, curfew extensions, twelve‑step meetings, house restrictions, etc.

Comply with agency OTC medication and lockbox procedures.

Monitor resident usage of agency phones.

Maintain resident property and storage; inventory, pack and secure residents’ property until discard period; prepare resident rooms as necessary.

Perform additional duties such as resume preparation and welcome meetings as required.

Attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Carry out all other duties assigned by a supervisor.

Third shift must complete scanning, shredding, office and bathroom cleaning, laundry, and breakfast set‑up/cleanup for residents.

Monitor dining room during meal times.

Ensure all paperwork is completed before ending shift.

Physical Requirements

Occasional climbing of stairs while carrying items up to 25 lbs.

Remain in a stationary position during shift.

Move items up to 25 lbs; move around the building multiple times per day.

Bending, twisting, kneeling, and reaching occasionally.
