Summary:

The Business Development Manager is a revenue-generating, field-based role responsible for managing and growing existing customer accounts within an assigned territory. This position focuses on building strong, in-person relationships, understanding customer business needs, delivering tailored solutions, and driving revenue growth through proactive service and strategic support.

Core Functions:

Serve as the primary field-based representative of Central States, fostering strong relationships, delivering value on-site, and ensuring ongoing customer success.

New Business Accountability: Fully responsible for acquiring and activating new accounts within the territory, directly contributing to company revenue and customer base growth.

Develop and implement strategic sales plans by identifying target markets, prospecting new customers, and executing growth strategies to meet and exceed sales goals within the assigned territory.

Actively seek, qualify, and secure new customer relationships through cold calling, field visits, referrals, and market research — with a focus on high-potential opportunities, understanding customer needs, and positioning Central States as the supplier of choice.

Establish a strong in-person presence within the assigned region by visiting prospective customers, observing competitive activity, and discovering new business opportunities.

Achieve assigned territory goals, including pounds sold, customer growth targets, and year-over-year revenue improvement.

Manage and grow existing accounts within the assigned territory, including recovering lost accounts and re-engaging underperforming ones. Identify opportunities to expand product offerings and drive increased customer volume.

Develop and execute a territory plan that prioritizes high-impact accounts, balances customer visits with strategic follow-ups, and ensures efficient use of time and resources to maximize territory growth.

Lead customer training on Central States products and the Central Link platform to improve customer efficiency, enhance ordering accuracy, and increase adoption of key tools and services.

Represent Central States at industry events, trade shows, and customer-hosted functions to strengthen brand visibility, reinforce partnerships, and support sales engagement efforts.

Ensure customers maintain professional, up-to-date product displays and have access to relevant marketing materials, literature, and samples that support their sales efforts.

Collaborate with internal departments—including Inside Sales, Operations, Quality, and Marketing—to resolve issues, support customer needs, and ensure alignment on territory priorities.

Proactively address quality concerns by conducting site visits, collaborating with the Corporate Quality Team, and guiding customers through issue resolution and warranty processes.

Gather and report market intelligence by monitoring competitor activity, pricing trends, customer feedback, and regional dynamics. Develop a clear understanding of the market layout and identify opportunities for new products or innovations to meet evolving customer needs.

Grow our Brand | Brand Management – Actively utilize social media outlets to promote our brand, culture, values, core competencies and products to generate brand awareness and increase our Company branding with industry related partners, customers, employees and candidates.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the CRM system, including visit notes, updated contact information, account changes, and actionable follow-up steps.

Act as a strategic advisor and advocate for customers, aligning Central States' products and services with customer goals while consistently demonstrating the company’s core values: Own It, Can Do, and Act In Love

Key Measures of Success:

Achievement of assigned territory sales goals, including new business pounds sold, pounds sold, down customer increases, lost accounts recovered and revenue growth targets.

Consistently onboarding new customers each month and converting qualified leads into active buying accounts.

Speed and completeness of the onboarding process, including timely first orders, product education, and customer setup.

Demonstrated strategic thinking to identify new business opportunities, growth opportunities, address competitive threats, and anticipate evolving customer needs.

Effectively collaborates with cross-functional sales team members to achieve territory goals and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Ensure customers have appropriate, up-to-date product displays and marketing materials, managing delivery and usage within budget.

Consistently receives high customer satisfaction scores, with actionable feedback that supports account retention and growth.

Ensures a seamless transition of accounts from the Regional Sales Executive, building immediate trust, maintaining service continuity, and driving early engagement with the customer.

Consistent, timely, and accurate use of the CRM system with documented activity, updated statuses, and clearly defined next steps to ensure visibility, accountability, and effective cross-functional collaboration.

Executes effective territory planning and time management, prioritizing high-impact accounts and maintaining a consistent in-person presence across the territory.

Demonstrates a strong understanding of the metal industry and actively aligns with Central States Manufacturing’s strategic initiatives.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and CRM systems to manage customer data, reporting, and create effective product displays and customer-facing presentations.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a relative field or equivalent job experience.

Three years of proven experience meeting/exceeding sales goals

Three years Field Sales Experience

Three years' experience with CRM Systems

Preferred:

Metal Industry experience

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office environment. This role will routinely utilize standard office equipment to perform the core functions listed in this job description. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies as well as communicate verbally and electronically. The work is primarily sedentary. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud and in a non-temperature-controlled environment. While performing the core function of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, and required to lift to 35 lbs.
