Position Summary: Lawson State Community College is accepting applications for part-time police officers.
This is an applicant pool.
Individuals will be hired as needed.
Submitted applications will remain on file for 36 months.
Salary Schedule: Local Salary Schedule $18 per hour with a maximum of 19 hours per week.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Patrol the college campus and make scheduled tours of buildings and grounds, by vehicle or on foot, to ensure buildings and persons are secure.
Monitor events on campus to ensure security and safety for students, participants, and attendees.
Respond to and investigate incidents on campus, including but not limited to motor vehicle incidents or criminal or college violations as assigned.
Enforce criminal and traffic laws; make arrests and issue summons as required.
Lock and unlock outer doors, check buildings and hallways after hours for signs of unusual activity.
Issue tickets to violators of campus parking regulations.
Monitor students and visitors to ensure compliance with college policies and regulations.
Complete clear and concise written offense reports immediately following an incident.
Log all activities in daily log register.
Inspect all assigned areas for safety hazards.
Investigate all adverse campus conditions and situations.
Participate in training concerning various aspects of law enforcement; attend department briefings.
Recertify on firearms range annually.
Lift, carry and move heavy objects within safety limits.
Serve as relief dispatcher as may be required.
Demonstrate physical fitness and agility.
Serve on college committees as assigned.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned by appropriate personnel.
Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including day, evening, night and weekend hours.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
One year of full‑time law‑enforcement work experience.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement.
Community and problem‑solving policing philosophies and principals.
Effective oral and written communication skills (ability to prepare concise and accurate reports).
Basic computer skills.
Detail‑oriented with an aptitude for problem‑solving.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to maintain self‑control and take directions from a supervisor.
Ability to perform physical activities necessary to protect oneself and others.
Ability to effectively use firearms and equipment associated with the work.
Required License, Certification, Or Special Credentials
Valid Alabama Driver’s License.
APOST Certification.
CPR Certification.
Physical Demands – Strength Rating
Ability to work extended hours to include day, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.Ability to run, walk, bend, stoop, climb, reach, push, pull, drag, and carry.
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds, drag and carry individuals away from dangerous situations and evacuate, if necessary.
Environmental Factors
Inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
Light conditions associated with day and night.
Personal danger, including but not limited to armed and/or dangerous persons or animals.
Hazards associated with emergency driving, traffic control, and working in and around traffic.
Hazards associated with natural and man‑made disasters.
