Position Title Maintenance Assistant, Residential Maintenance Services
Campus Living
is accepting applications for the
Maintenance Assistant
position. In this role, you will work with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals and ensure that structures and equipment are installed correctly, properly maintained and repaired as needed across UB’s North and South campuses. All the Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UB’s residential halls and apartments.
In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Our priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
As a Maintenance Assistant, your contributions will ensure that structures and equipment are installed correctly, properly maintained, and repaired as needed.
Responsibilities include:
Performs routine replacement and repair of plumbing equipment.
Repairing and installing equipment such as dishwashers, laundry equipment, repair leaks in water lined.
Maintain and hang signage.
Semiskilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, stairs, railing, furniture, locks, and door hardware.
Masonry and concrete repairs or installations
Paint and make repairs to vacant living spaces.
Install light fixtures, outlets, and switches.
Repair electrical equipment.

Departmental Operating Needs
Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures is essential as well as a demonstrated commitment to following those procedures.
Knowledge of applicable NYS codes and regulations is important, the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Traveling within the campus, between the campuses, and off campus, therefore, the candidate must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet this requirement.
The incumbent must be able to communicate well with others and possess and demonstrate positive customer service skills.
Since the activities of other employees depend on the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.
Due to the nature of the work, the incumbent must hold the discipline, motivation, and knowledge to successfully complete tasks independently with little to no supervision.
Professionalism is important as the incumbent may serve as a supervisor to designated staff; the incumbent will also encounter students, staff, and visitors throughout the workday; representing Campus Living in a positive manner is essential.
The incumbent must be able to demonstrate skills at a high level that are appropriate for the trade/position.
Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive:
Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA‑P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands Routine tasks require light to moderately heavy physical effort. The ability to be in a stationary position, ascend/descend, position self to complete tasks, and work at elevated heights using ladders and scaffolds for extended periods of time is required.
Salary Range Salary Range $42,641
Additional Salary Information Work Days Weekdays – Monday – Friday
Work Hours 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
