Recreation Specialist Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist coordinates youth programs, including development, supervision, program registration, activity planning, scheduling of facility use, staff scheduling, and reception. The role also provides administrative assistance to the Recreation Supervisors, Assistant Recreation Managers, and Recreation Manager.

Essential Functions

Plan, organize, and conduct recreation activities for a wide variety of age groups attending programs; programs include youth and adult sports, R.E.C. Van, youth break camps, seniors, aquatics, special events, and facility rental programs.

Implement activities and provide general supervision over recreation programs, including use of equipment and assigned areas or programs.

Assist in general maintenance and daily operations of program and facilities.

Use computers for research, registration, program schedules, communication, and file maintenance.

Maintain records of registration, emergency forms, prepare program plans and activities, and maintain other related program documents.

Assist Assistant Recreation Managers and Recreation Supervisors with administrative tasks for facility rentals, aquatics, cash handling, special interest classes, youth or adult sports, youth break camps, special events, seniors, marketing, or department administration.

Assist with recruiting, hiring, and training of site staff.

Assist Supervisors with purchase, distribution, storage, and maintenance of supplies and equipment.

Assist in preparation and administration of the budget for recreation programs.

Effectively communicate program and activity schedules with parents, schools, and staff in a timely manner.

Troubleshoot any concerns that may occur during program.

Act as a Recreation Leader, Senior Recreation Leader, Custodian/Security, Lifeguard, or Site Leader when needed to fulfill program responsibilities or other duties as required.

Communicate effectively and tactfully, developing positive working relationships with participants, parents/guardians, volunteers, staff, school personnel, and other agencies.

Perform physical labor such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy objects up to 50 lbs., walking, standing, stooping, and crouching for long periods.

Work under various weather conditions.

Work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.

Greet the public, answer questions, and direct them to proper personnel.

Additional Responsibilities Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge of working with youth and adults in recreation activities and/or facility rentals; customer service; verbal and written communication; and effective use of email, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Publisher. Experience with recreation software is highly desirable.

Ability to organize and conduct groups of all sizes, make quick and accurate judgment calls, establish and maintain positive relationships with the public, schools, volunteers, and other employees; follow oral and written directions and schedules; read and write English; and maintain a vehicle for travel to various locations daily.

Physical requirements: perform physical labor, lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects up to 50 lbs., walk, stand, stoop, and crouch for long periods.

Education and Experience Minimum 18 years old; high‑school graduation or equivalent. Two‑year degree in Recreation, Early Childhood Education, or related field preferred. Two years’ experience in recreation, facility rentals, or a related field preferred; additional experience may be considered in lieu of the college degree requirement.

Certificates and Licenses Required to obtain the American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate or be willing to take a class to receive certificate. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record. Highly desired: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, CPR/AED Professional Rescuer, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator.

Schedule and Hours Approximately 15–25 hours per week; hours vary depending on program needs. May be required to work unusual hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Compensation and Status $21.40 – $22.40 per hour, non‑exempt.
