The Commercial Banking Portfolio Officer position is designed to develop an individual seeking a Business Banker role with Western State Bank in the next 12-24 months. The duration of this developmental role will be determined by the individual’s prior experience and velocity of development in this position. The Commercial Banking Portfolio Officer will be cross trained within all areas of Business/Commercial Banking including but not limited to Credit Underwriting/Analysis, Credit Monitoring, Credit Decisioning, Risk Assessment, Portfolio Management, Loan Documentation, Collateral Perfection, Loan Servicing, Quality Assurance, Relationship Management, Customer Service, Sales, Business Development, etc.
The Commercial Banking Portfolio Officer training will be in the field, versus a classroom type setting. Training and work responsibilities will be comprised of three (3) primary segments; Credit Analysis/Administration segment, Portfolio Management segment, and Business Development/Service segment. Duration of training and responsibilities in each segment will be determined by the candidate’s prior experience and the manager’s assessment of progress in each area. While training and responsibilities will concentrate on one segment at a time, there will be significant cross-over between segments at any given time.
Credit Analysis Segment
Assess credit applications and loan files to assess the risk in accordance with the organization’s mission, core values and team guidelines. Such commercial credit assessment requires proper risk administration including, but not limited to, recognizing key risks via credit analysis, ensuring a pertinent level of question/answer discovery with BBO/CBO via borrowers, and coordinating with loan production on prudent loan structuring, credit enhancements and move forward/denial determinations.
Ongoing portfolio and risk management with specific duties including review and analysis of ongoing financial reporting from a performance and credit risk perspective, analysis of trend cards/stress test analysis, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, covenant testing, borrowing base/margin account monitoring and meeting with borrowers on a periodic basis to discuss operations, trends, issues in collaboration with the respective BBO.
Prepare commercial and ag loan presentations in accordance with loan policy for approval by individual parties or various committees.
Identify current and possible future credit risks that may cause Western State Bank to exceed credit risk or loss tolerances.
Provides expertise in various lending issues and applications including expertise in numerous specialized areas of lending.
Continually provides strategic guidance, thoughts and ideas to bank management to grow and improve the overall financial health of the bank.
Executes loan policy and ensures that deviations from policy are properly reported and mitigated.
Consults with the Chief Credit Officer, Credit Department Manager and their Supervisor on complex or unusual loan relationships, as needed.
Ongoing tracking and review of interim financial information provided by the customer in coordination with the assigned lender and portfolio manager.
Manage special projects as needed. These projects will vary based on workload, organizational priority and opportunities presented.
Works harmoniously and collaboratively with team members to accomplish Bank objectives.
Portfolio Management Segment
Assist BBO to maintain commercial loan files, inter-departmental reporting needs, databases and interaction with Business Banking Assistants in conjunction with respective BBO’s to ensure timely clearing of collateral and financial monitoring ticklers. Ensure thorough documentation, follow-up and support for existing relationships and portfolio.
Administrative monitoring and BBO data gathering assistance related to timely workflow prioritization for upcoming maturities, annual reviews and new credit requests.
Provide ongoing risk rating assessment to ensure all loans are properly risk rated and ensure that any necessary upgrades or downgrades are completed timely.
Provide assistance to the respective BBO in the areas of credit risk ascertainment (front-end and existing relationships), prudent loan structuring, and adherence to bank policies, operating procedures and credit culture.
Act as a liaison to Credit to ensure that all data and relevant facts/circumstances are gathered to promulgate an efficient, timely and well-informed decision making and analytical product.
Business Development/Customer Service Segment
Responds to commercial customer inquiries related to existing accounts, routine customer needs.
Develop sales calling plan with Supervisor or mentor. Develop calling plan for both existing clients and new client prospects. In conjunction with your supervisor, develop a calling plan that aligns with WSB’s credit appetite and discipline, product offering and desire for full relationships.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of all WSB products to ensure sales calls are effective. Sound understanding of WSB’s product offering will allow for confident delivery of products through the business development process.
Partner with other BBO’s, TMO’s, Market President, or Regional President on outbound sales calls and activities.
Strategically attend networking events to identify potential clients, centers of influence and referral sources to grow your portfolio.
Serve as dedicated back-up customer contact to BBO when they are unavailable or on PTO.
Review of existing portfolios to identify growth and/or expansion opportunities.
Maintain ongoing credit and file administration. Work with internal credit, loan processing, and internal databases to ensure timely collection of items, ticklers, and maintenance of current customers is taking place.
Identify deposit opportunities and collaborate in cross-sell opportunities between other internal teams and services.
Strictly adhere to and follow the credit process and ensure collaborative interactions with the support teams such as credit, Business Banking Assistant (BBA), loan and deposit operations, Treasury Management Officers (TMO) and Compliance.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Business Management preferred with 3+ years of credit and/or business banking experience preferred.
This is a full-time position with benefits, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Monday - Friday.
