Job Summary The CAD Technician will review and analyze field and construction plan data, develop 3D surface models, verify plan quantities, and perform other survey functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work with CAD team members or independently to generate accurate survey data for field crews and machine control systems.
Track project RFIs, Change Orders, and Addendums while maintaining up‑to‑date field files.
Document all CAD and plan errors for RFIs.
Use current CAD platforms and plans to create 3D surface models, calculate bridge structures, drainage runs, utilities, etc.
Create cut/fill reports and plot exhibits for survey managers.
Track time spent on projects for budgeting purposes.
Create roadway corridors.
Prepare drawings with high precision and at scale.
Create and maintain project alignments, profiles, tie‑ins, etc.
Apply COGO and other survey methodology to generate usable survey points, maps, 3D surface models, and 3D line work.
Qualifications and Skills
Associate’s or technical school degree preferred.
Must have AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center experience.
Minimum 3+ years in a survey technician role, capable of creating and maintaining 3D roadway models and calculating all aspects of a civil construction site.
Survey experience in a crew‑chief type role is a plus.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans for generating field layout data.
Working knowledge of 3D surfaces, quantity reports, and surface grade checks.
Self‑motivated, able to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment with minimal supervision.
Accurately perform survey computations and mapping for roadway, drainage, utilities, bridges, walls, and more.
Strong communication, organizational, problem‑solving, methodical, consistent, detail‑oriented, and precise.
Fully understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Familiar with files such as LandXML, .csv, .dwg, .dgn, .ttm, .dtm, .tin, .vce, .vcl, etc.
Knowledge of Bentley Microstation Inroads/Geopak software.
Knowledge of Trimble Business Center software and site‑positioning equipment (GPS and robotic total stations).
Basic Microsoft Office skills.
Bilingual a plus.
Heavy civil experience required.
Experience in Carlson Civil – Survey, Bentley MicroStation, or Terra-Model.
