The overall purpose of this position is to support the cross‑departmental teams working with conferences in maintaining good standing with US and global taxing jurisdictions and to make recommendations to optimize the organization’s tax obligations and assist with tax planning by researching, interpreting, and implementing identified tax solutions. This person will work in collaboration with the conference business and align in establishing processes and protocols. This role provides technical guidance, combining advanced expertise in non‑profit, and indirect tax strategy, review, and reporting with the proactive development and implementation of tax technology and automation solutions. The person in this position identifies, develops, and executes solutions for highly complex tax compliance functions as it pertains to the US and global operations of IEEE and its subsidiaries. This position is expected to work independently, with minimal supervision, and with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities

Tax reporting and compliance – international direct and indirect tax

Assist with design and implementation of recommended tax policies and strategies

Define requirements and recommend plans and resources needed to meet future tax reporting and compliance requirements

Monitor changes that impact the organization

Research tax rules and regulations relevant to global events

Maintain, revise, and streamline tax procedures

Identify areas of tax savings by analyzing tax information

Interface with volunteers, staff, and professional tax advisors to resolve complex issues

Educate volunteers and staff regarding tax processes and requirements

Make recommendations for business and process improvements

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

Accurate preparation, review, and timely filing of assigned tax returns: Federal, state, local, and international income tax returns

Indirect tax returns (SUT, VAT, GST, JCT, etc.)

Other required statutory reporting

Coordinate the end‑to‑end VAT registration and filings lifecycle

Assist with VAT tax audits and related inquiries

Resolve complex issues as they arise

Prepare and maintain tax provision schedules, including ASC 450 and ASC 740 calculations

Manage cross‑departmental accounting and tax issues

Tax Planning

Develop and maintain tax policies, processes, and internal controls

Research tax laws and recommend tax strategies relevant to global events

Perform tax assessments on revenue streams and specific products related to conference events

Initiate cross‑department projects around compliance and technology

Improve efficiency and controls, including documenting processes and maintaining written records of applicable regulations

Complete essential reconciliations

Problem Solving

Review and resolve issues that arise with the enterprise transaction tax system or government taxing jurisdiction platforms and coordinate duties for the tax engine

Uniform indirect tax coordination for IEEE’s global conference business

Assist with tax risk assessments and document key decisions and rationales

Provide training and practical guidance to conference team and volunteers

Maintain data integrity and audit trails for global tax reporting

Respond accurately and timely to inquiries from internal and external customers and make recommendations when appropriate

Perform compliance risk and tax contingency analysis

Special projects

Tax Technology

Assist with conference related tax system and automation initiatives

Assist with implementation of new tax registrations in the tax engine and across IEEE systems

Assist with implementation of conference related electronic invoicing regulations and other technical compliance requirements

Drive continuous improvements to tax procedures through automation and system enhancement

Coordinate with internal and external partners to resolve issues as they develop

Qualifications Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in accounting or tax (Required)

Master's or other advanced degree (Preferred)

Work Experience

4-7 years tax and/or accounting experience (Required)

Licenses and Certifications

CPA or JD with tax/finance background (Preferred)

Skills and Requirements

Experienced tax exempt professional – proficient with direct and indirect tax return preparation and review, and tax research.

Effective interpersonal skills to ensure that tax compliance plans are created that address the needs and known constraints of the IEEE enterprise.

Ability to analyze compliance requirements, identify problems, design appropriate reporting solutions, and solve problems with moderate supervision.

Must demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism when dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters.

Positive attitude and a supportive, team‑based approach towards the attainment of goals.

Ability to successfully prioritize and lead several projects simultaneously to completion.

Excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to plan, execute and improve work processes.

High level of initiative and motivation.

Must be able to work in a deadline‑oriented environment.

Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize and support multiple complex projects (e.g., system implementations, audits) to completion in a deadline‑oriented environment.

Technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges. Proficient in various computer applications including tax software (direct and indirect tax applications), Google and Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. ERP system experience a plus.

Familiarity with emerging technologies, including automation and AI, in tax process design and transformation.

Ability to build relationships and constructively interact with the team, internal IEEE departments and volunteers.

Works independently with minimal supervision.
