Position Purpose

Under general supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Athletic Trainer I provides the full range of clinical athletic training functions for student-athletes during training and competition, in accordance with NCAA and NATA guidelines. The Athletic Trainer I also provides injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries. The position may receive technical direction from the Director of Student Health Services on medical charting, peer review, privileging/credentialing, medical releases, and HIPAA compliance.

Responsibilities Provide the full range of clinical athletic training functions for student-athletes during training and competition.

Injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries.

Maintain medical charting, HIPAA compliance, and documentation as directed.

Collaborate with Director of Athletics, coaches, physicians, and other health professionals on injury treatment plans and progress.

Coordinate with coaching staff regarding injury status and treatment plans.

Assist with coordinating student-athlete doctor’s appointments as needed.

Provide access to appropriate therapy modalities in accordance with physician orders and university guidelines.

Maintain equipment and cleanliness of athletic training facilities.

Provide athletic training services to students (non-athletes) as needed.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field; or combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge. Course work must include Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements. Licenses:

NATABOC certification for Athletic Trainer; valid driver’s license or ability to obtain by date of hire; CPR/AED certified. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities (SKAs):

Regular and reliable attendance.

Ability to assess and evaluate injuries; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs; manage and treat injuries.

Proficiency with therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation equipment; determine appropriate referrals.

Emergency response skills and ability to recognize life-threatening situations.

Computer literacy for medical records, insurance, and scheduling; ability to handle competing priorities.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to liaise among athletes, coaching staff, physicians, and other health professionals.

Knowledge of athletic training principles, conditioning, injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation.

Familiarity with HIPAA requirements and OSHA standards; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Customer service orientation and professional diplomacy.

Excellent written and verbal communication; strong organizational and time management skills.

Willingness to travel with teams; ability to work holidays and irregular hours as needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in athletic training. Experience with collegiate and/or professional athletes.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Physical Demands:

MEDIUM WORK – up to 40% of activities involve sitting, standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and related motions. Environmental Factors:

Exposure to noise, temperature/humidity changes, dust/fumes, and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens; travel with teams to competitions; possible off-site training.
