Commercial Loan Officer

The Commercial Loan Officer will interview business loan applicants, explain the various loan products and enhancement programs, gather financial information for underwriting, conduct preliminary analysis, coordinate with processors and analysts, and provide written and verbal loan recommendations to the Business Loan Committee. The role involves managing a business loan portfolio, facilitating the loan process from interview to closing, and nurturing member relationships throughout the life of the loan.
Work Arrangement This position is hybrid, based at the Auburn Hills Regional Office with occasional visits to Congress Street/Downtown Detroit. Typically 1–2 days onsite and the remainder of the week remote.
Department Hours Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm ET. Evening and weekend business development events are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Commercial Loan Officer I
Manage a loan portfolio of diverse business members
Grow the portfolio through a Business Development Plan, calling on current members, prospects, and referrals, and engaging in community and trade show activities
Maintain knowledge of industry trends, products, and technology
Monitor loan portfolio for financial statements, covenant adherence, past‑due accounts, and report potential issues proactively
Interview members for business loans at the business location or by phone, answering loan questions throughout the process
Conduct personal visits and inspections to collateral properties
Negotiate and execute loan proposals
Co‑ordinate appraisals, title searches, surveys, credit reports, inspections, UCC filings, and other necessary arrangements; ensure underwriting has begun
Collaborate with the Business Credit Analyst on loan analysis and final written loan presentation
Ensure compliant lending procedures, conditions, and covenants, and that paperwork aligns with approved loan terms
Attend Business Loan Committee meetings, present loans, and provide recommendations
Approve loans within established authority; present higher‑authority loans to management
Provide input on lending interest rates to the Business Services Manager and Loan Committee
Coordinate collection efforts with the Adjustment Department for delinquent loans
Cross‑sell credit union products as appropriate
Attend trainings and seminars to stay current on regulations and business trends
Assist in monitoring loan operations and responding to general service inquiries
Participate in departmental and external training programs for compliance and regulatory awareness
Perform other duties and assist other employees as assigned.
Commercial Loan Officer II
All Level I duties and responsibilities
Assist with annual loan policy review and provide input for change
Assist with updating the Business Loan Underwriting Manual
Review commitment letters, proposals, and term sheets drafted by Level I officers
Support ongoing business relationships with key vendors and professionals in the community
Manage complex negotiations to resolve issues
Assist with managing delinquent or non‑performing loans.
Senior Commercial Loan Officer
All Level I and II duties and responsibilities
Develop and maintain an active referral network for new business identification
Assist in training and developing Level I and II officers
Assist in developing business loan products and services that best serve the Credit Union and its members
Provide input on lending interest rates to management and the Loan Committee
Report on state of the economy and industry opportunities to the Business Services Manager
Provide performance feedback to Management regarding Level I and II officers
Ensure lending policies, procedures, and practices conform to industry and regulatory standards
Work with the Senior Business Credit Analyst to meet pipeline service standards, aiming for loan decisions within three business‑week periods.
Job Requirements Commercial Loan Officer I
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Combination of education and/or experience: Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, or sales, or at least four years of financial institution experience.
Minimum two years as a Small Business Lender or commercial lender (preferred).
Minimum two years of progressively responsible business lending experience.
Minimum two years of commercial underwriting experience.
Good math skills preferred.
Analytical ability to assess applicant credit status.
Knowledge of state and federal lending laws: Truth‑in‑Lending, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Rights to Financial Privacy Act, Bank Secrecy Act, Money Laundering Control Amendment Act.
Excellent member service and interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills (face‑to‑face, phone, professional grammar).
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and member requests with minimal supervision.

All Level I knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Combination of education and/or experience: Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, or sales, or at least six years of financial institution experience.
Minimum three years of progressively responsible business lending experience.
Completion of Business Lending School or equivalent training.
Senior Commercial Loan Officer
All Level I and II knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Combination of education and/or experience: Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, or sales, or seven or more years of financial institution experience.
Demonstrated ability to lead others.
Ability to assist in training staff on the software programs used by the Business Services department.
