Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee
We are seeking to hire an intake worker for our Eviction Right to Counsel Program in Nashville. The Eviction Right to Counsel Program is a grant-funded project wherein low- and moderate-income tenants facing eviction will receive legal representation to ensure equity and inclusion in the legal system. This role is often the first contact tenants make with LASMTC, so the ability to communicate effectively and create a positive environment is a must. The Eviction Right to Counsel Intake Specialist will screen and compile initial intake information for new client cases and enter data into our computer database to open new cases daily. This role may also perform general administrative support to employees and attend court and outreach events to assist with intake and eligibility screening for on-site representation. This position is funded in part by and in collaboration with, one or more grants. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities
Interview applicants and, in consultation with supervising attorney, determine level of service to be provided.
Conduct intake interviews and screen applicants for conflicts of interest, legal problem, and eligibility. Follow up as necessary.
Communicate with applicants about the process and timelines for assistance. Provide clients with information and referrals to other resources as appropriate.
Create and maintain positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and state which would benefit the client population.
Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines. Support the casework of attorneys as assigned.
Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LAS staff.
Commute to events and the Nashville office when necessary, including for monthly check-ins and to assist with court-based outreach.
Maintain a suitable home-based workspace.
Qualifications
Minimum High School diploma or GED. Associate’s degree preferred.
2 years prior experience working in a law office, court, social service agency, or other relevant setting.
Experience working with low-income people.
Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software.
Effective oral and written communication skills, including in client interviews and helping people in crisis. Proficiency in use of office equipment (copiers, scanners, facsimile, postage machine, etc.). Fluency in written and spoken Spanish or Arabic is a plus.
