Job Description Police Officers perform a wide range of tasks to promote overall public safety. Work involves protecting lives, property, and rights of the public; investigating criminal activity; and assisting in university functions by providing safety and security services. Officers are also responsible for testifying in court and preparing accurate reports. In addition to physical skills, Police Officers require strong ethical behavior, self-discipline, diplomacy, and human compassion. Type of Recruitment, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of criminal laws, case laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, juvenile procedures, effective policing practices, and due process. Knowledge of effective communication strategies with excellent written and verbal skills. Effective problem-solving skills, especially when serving diverse community members. Good observation and memory skills. Ability to interpret, explain, and apply policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Ability to treat others with dignity and respect. Decision-making abilities based on standards and accurate assessments. Ability to complete documentation and reports accurately. Proficiency with Windows OS, Apple iOS, Microsoft Office Suite, and police mobile recording equipment. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to handle aggressive or emotionally unstable persons professionally. Strong community relations skills and ability to work with a culturally diverse community. Willingness to work shifts, including during inclement weather or emergencies. Designated as Essential Personnel Special licenses, registration, or certification: Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain within 60 days of appointment. Insurable driving record. Education or Training High school diploma or GED. Successful completion of a Virginia law enforcement training academy and state certification within one year. VCIN certification within one year. Extensive background, physical, and psychological testing. Experience Customer service or public service experience. Preferably several years in law enforcement, especially in a university setting. CPR and First Aid certification. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Current VCIN and General Instructor certifications advantageous. Conditions of Employment Must report during emergencies and adverse weather. Complete background checks, polygraph, psychological, and medical exams. Obtain VCIN and state certification within one year. Pass physical abilities and POST tests. Subject to drug testing. Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; overtime may be required. This position is sensitive; a fingerprint-based criminal history check is required. This is an open until filled recruitment, which may close early once a suitable applicant pool is formed. Salary begins at $45,213, commensurate with education and experience.
