Summary A Police Officer at the UNC Hospital campus is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, and property within the hospital campus. Officers perform a variety of law enforcement duties, including patrolling, responding to emergencies, and enforcing hospital policies and regulations.

This position is eligible for a $15,000 commitment incentive spread over a two‑year period.

Responsibilities

Emergency Response:

Respond promptly to any emergency, alarm, or crisis; participate as a functioning part of the Emergency Response Team; maintain working knowledge of emergency codes and procedures.

Conflict Resolution:

Mediate and resolve conflicts or disturbances involving patients, visitors, or staff; use deescalation techniques; assist with mental‑health custody issues and coordinate transportation.

Community Policing:

Patrol campuses, investigate complaints, and enforce laws using a Community‑Oriented Policing philosophy; develop and implement preventative patrol techniques.

Investigations & Incident Report Writing:

Enter incident reports in Police‑Pak; investigate incidents, document evidence, apprehend criminals, and submit all necessary paperwork.

Patrol & Surveillance:

Detect and deter criminal activity; document hazards; escort personnel; provide after‑hours access; secure patient property.

Policy & Procedures:

Maintain familiarity with departmental, hospital, environmental, health, and safety policies; understand criminal statutes, probable cause, use of force, and communication protocols.

Special Areas of Responsibility:

Manage security‑sensitive areas, perform inspections, and coordinate special events.

Community Engagement:

Build positive relationships and provide assistance to staff, patients, and visitors.

Traffic Control:

Enforce parking regulations, write citations, and initiate towing as required.

Other Information Education Requirements:

None required; successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training or an equivalent.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Valid North Carolina driver’s license; completion of BLET and NC CJETSC general certification.

Out‑of‑state Candidates:

Must complete a BLET course accredited by the state of transfer.

No service break exceeding one year.

Must complete 56 hours of additional training, pass the state exam, and successfully pass a thorough background, psychological, polygraph, drug, and physical examination.

Professional Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 2 years as a certified Law Enforcement Officer.

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities

Must work shift duty from 5:50 am to 5:50 pm or 5:50 pm to 5:50 am; shifts flexible.

Strong verbal and written communication skills; professional interaction with public and criminal‑justice representatives.

Willingness to adhere to moral and ethical principles and to possess sound moral character and honesty.

Ability to work independently and as part of a coordinated team; lead when needed.

Ability to apply laws, ordinances, and departmental policies to a broad range of circumstances.
