Overview The Corvallis Police Department invites you to join a dedicated team of Police Officers who work independently and cooperatively to provide proactive protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing objectives. Officers perform investigations of crimes, ensure community safety, and maintain professionalism in all duties.

Responsibilities Officers perform a variety of essential functions. They detect and deter crime, engage in community education, administer traffic enforcement, and investigate accidents.

Interview victims and witnesses; interview and interrogate suspects in accordance with legal requirements.

Gather and process physical evidence and intelligence using surveillance, drug testing, photography, video, audio recording, fingerprinting, and database research.

Prepare affidavits, execute search and arrest warrants, and apprehend suspects.

Prepare reports, coordinate prosecution with attorneys, and prepare cases for trial, including testifying in court.

Direct and assist other personnel at crime scenes and provide instructions to community members.

Serve as a resource for specialized knowledge and act as an expert witness when required.

Provide community services such as mediation, traffic control, and crowd control, ensuring peace in civil disputes.

Process prisoners, including photographing, fingerprinting, booking, and transporting as needed.

Analyze crime data to identify trends and develop intervention methods.

Lead and direct volunteers and oversee special event planning and public relations duties.

Use computers for research, report writing, bookings, investigations, and communication.

Additional Assignments Officers may be assigned to special roles such as Detective, Motorcycle Officer, Canine Officer, School Resource Officer, or Community Livability Officer. These assignments require additional skills or training and focus on specialized functions while retaining core officer duties.

Education and Experience High School diploma or equivalent is required.

An Associate’s degree or 90 quarter/60 semester hours from an accredited institution is highly preferred.

Basic DPSST Certificate must be completed within 18 months of employment.

Communicate effectively in writing and verbally under stress.

Manage multiple investigations, patrol duties, traffic enforcement, community service, special assignments, and training.

Make decisive actions in highly stressful, rapidly deteriorating, or violent situations.

Perform physical tasks such as walking, running, lifting, and restraining individuals.

Operate police vehicles and motorcycles safely and within standards.

Use firearms, weapons, and equipment according to state standards.

Use computers to perform essential functions promptly.

Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, respect for diversity, and commitment to public service.

Prioritize workloads, coordinate with agencies, and adapt to changing priorities.

Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.

Speak effectively in public and meet sustainability commitments.

Special Requirements

Intoxilyzer certification within 12 months.

CPR Certification.

Valid Oregon driver’s license and compliant driving record.

U.S. citizen within 18 months of hire; minimum age 21; resident within 25 miles of Corvallis city limits (waiver possible).

Drug screen clearance.

Medical, vision, hearing, and psychological examinations passed.

Background investigation with criminal history and ORS CPSIS clearance.

Compliance with CALEA accreditation standards.

Ability to testify in court.
