The Benefits Specialist (Contract) oversees the day-to-day administration of employee benefits, workers’ compensation claims, and leave of absence programs, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional employee support. This role is a contract opportunity duration of contract 3-6 months.

The Benefits Specialist (Contract) is required to perform job duties inclusive of but not limited to the following:

Benefits Administration

Manage the day-to-day administration of employee benefits, including responding to inquiries related to enrollments, status changes, qualified life events, and general troubleshooting.

Oversee annual Open Enrollment activities, including system configuration, employee support, and post-enrollment reconciliation.

Configure, maintain, and update benefit plans within the HRIS/Payroll system (UKG) and ensure all data is accurately reflected in carrier systems.

Educate employees on benefit offerings, providing clear guidance to help them make informed decisions.

Assist in vendor relationship management, serving as liaison between employees, HR, vendors and other stakeholders.

Ensure ongoing compliance with HIPAA regulations and company privacy policies.

Review, audit, and reconcile monthly invoices from all benefit carriers and vendors to ensure accuracy.

Leave of Absence Administration

Administer all leave of absence programs, ensuring timely communication and accurate distribution of required documentation.

Support employees in understanding their leave rights and navigating the complexities of leave programs.

Evaluate and determine leave requests, issuing approvals or denials with HR support as needed.

Track, monitor, and facilitate all leaves of absence and ADA accommodation requests.

Lead the interactive ADA process, collaborating with leaders to identify and implement reasonable accommodations.

Manage all aspects of the Workers’ Compensation program from claim initiation through closure.

Serve as the primary liaison with brokers, carriers, medical providers, managers, and employees to ensure prompt care and coordinated claim handling.

Partner with HR, Safety, and Fleet teams to ensure timely and accurate incident reporting and follow-up.

Communicate work restrictions and light-duty assignments to management, ensuring compliance with all modifications.

Collaborate with the Safety team to identify trends and recommend preventative measures.

Work closely with claims adjusters, carrier, and brokers to ensure claims are promptly reviewed, thoroughly investigated, and regularly updated.

Maintain detailed, accurate records and an up-to-date understanding of all open claims.

This role is Full-Time Contract Length of Contract 3-6 months

Pay Range $32-$40 depending on experience

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a subject matter expert for other positions in the organization.

Accomplishes department objectives and implements and enforces departmental systems, policies, and procedures.

Required Skills / Abilities

Hands-on experience with a wide range of benefit offerings, including HMO, PPO, HDHP, FSA, HSA, and other ancillary plans.

Demonstrated experience managing annual benefits enrollment within a comprehensive HRIS platform.

Experience administering benefits in UKG is highly desirable.

Strong working knowledge of California leave laws, with proven experience serving as the primary decision-maker for leave approvals.

Multi-state leave administration experience is a plus.

Familiarity with California Workers’ Compensation regulations.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Intermediate to advanced Excel proficiency.

Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Experience working in mid-sized organizations (200–500 employees).

Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive and HIPAA-protected information.

Education and Experience

Required: Minimum of 3 years’ full-cycle benefits experience

Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing California leave of absences

Preferred: 1 year managing California Workers' Compensation claims

Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Certification

SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or equivalent Human Resources Certification

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or equivalent experience

Physical Requirements

Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards

Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Ability to stand for extended periods of time

Ability to use the computer, mouse, and type regularly

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
