Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Salary: $65,000 to $72,000

Job Overview Seven Oaks Golf Club, a

designed course, is nestled on the Colgate University Campus at the upper end of the Chenango Valley, in Hamilton, New York. We are seeking to fill the position of assistant golf course superintendent reporting directly to the golf course superintendent. The assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course areas, including but not limited to, tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent’s capacity during his absence.
Responsibilities
Assists in the planning and supervising of the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance on golf course equipment.
Grinds reels and performs height of cut checks.
Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects/failures in various golf course maintenance equipment.
Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment. Strongly motivated to align and partner with superintendent to complete all tasks to the highest standards and achieve team goals.
May modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
Daily supervision of crew to include scheduling, training, safety and regulatory compliance, time and attendance approval and performance. Ensure staff maintain equipment to established standards.
Maintain accurate and timely records of supplies, various logs and compliance with DEC and federal regulations.
Proper application of pesticides and fertilizers.
Effectively operate and troubleshoot computerized irrigation control system.
Assist with developing budget recommendations and control expenditures in accordance with guidelines.
Responsible for the effective supervision of assigned staff. Ensures selection and hiring of high-quality employees; ensures appropriate distribution of work assignments and high quality of employee work product; ensures fair and accurate performance assessments and feedback to include identifying areas for professional development and documenting and conducting disciplinary measures, as needed. Responsible for ensuring fair and accurate decisions regarding employment status (hire, promotion, salary increases, termination); ensures the creation of effective opportunities and programs for employee mentoring, development and sustained performance.
Qualifications
2-3 years managerial experience as a golf course Superintendent or 1st Assistant Superintendent, or within a closely related field.
Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems.
Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications as specified by supervisor.
Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of employees and equipment.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
Ability to build and maintain effective employee and public relations.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree or certification in turfgrass management or related program.
Familiarity with computerized irrigation control systems, including, basic knowledge of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components.
Knowledge of watering principles and practices.
Familiarity with identifying water drought stress areas on turf grass.
Education High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree in plant science or turf grass management is preferred.
Certifications A current valid driver's license, in accordance with the University’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required. May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
