Under limited supervision, the Police Officer will perform general policing functions intended to ensure the safety and security of the lives and property within the City. Activities include patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigative duties. Officers may be assigned to special activities or projects on an on-going or short-term basis (e.g., crime prevention investigations, school resource officer, etc.). The work involves considerable risk to personal safety and requires quick decision-making to determine appropriate actions.

Responsibilities include:

Enforcing laws and regulations in a designated area, providing security, detecting violators, and developing positive community relationships.

Coordinating with governmental and private agencies to resolve issues.

Maintaining visibility in the community to discourage violations.

Observing and intervening in unusual activity to prevent violations.

Issuing warnings or citations for violations, conducting detentions, interviews, and arrests as appropriate.

Enforcing traffic laws, operating radar, administering tests, and transporting intoxicated persons.

Conducting security checks, responding to non-emergency calls, and handling emergencies.

Providing first aid, crowd control, and scene security at emergencies.

Collecting evidence, conducting investigations, and documenting incidents.

Participating in community policing efforts, crime prevention, and educational activities.

Maintaining records, preparing reports, and testifying in court.

Maintaining equipment and fostering professional relationships with colleagues and the public.

Following safety protocols and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

60 semester hours in criminal justice or a related field, or 4 years of honorable Military service in a similar position.

Equivalent education and experience accepted.

Licensed or eligible for licensure as a North Dakota Peace Officer.

Ability to testify credibly in court.

Effective communication skills, both oral and written.

Valid driver’s license.

Lateral applicant requirements:

Completion of a Law Enforcement Skills Academy and POST licensure or eligibility.

At least one year of law enforcement experience.
