Overview The Interpreter/Translator provides competent and culturally sensitive Spanish in-person, telephone, and video-remote interpretation for patients and their families/caregivers with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Services may be provided for LLUMC and LLUCH hospitals. The role requires maintaining working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and organizational policies related to LEP, documenting interpretation in the medical record, and adhering to professional ethics and standards.

Responsibilities

Provide in-person, telephone, and video-remote interpretation for patients and families in a healthcare setting.

Maintain documentation of interpretation in the medical record according to established guidelines.

Adhere to the Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Practice for healthcare interpreters.

Utilize interpersonal skills to deliver high-level customer service and support safe patient care.

Support interpretation services across LLUMC and LLUCH sites as needed.

Perform other duties as needed related to interpretation services.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's Degree preferred. Minimum two years of experience as an interpreter in a healthcare setting using in-person, telephone, and video-remote interpretation.

Knowledge and Skills:

Proficient in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; basic knowledge of cultural folk medicine; strong customer service background. Bilingual and bicultural in English and Spanish required. Able to keyboard 40 wpm. Able to read/write legibly; speak English with professional quality; operate computer and software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Ability to use basic office equipment. Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills; ability to work under pressure and independently.

Color vision and hearing requirements sufficient to perform duties (see details in original description).

Licensure and Certifications:

Proof of training in an accredited interpreter program required. National Translation Accreditation Language Competency or California State Interpreter Certification preferred.
