Overview
Are you a lateral, academy graduate or currently enrolled in a police academy? We are looking for energetic and community oriented police officers to join our team and help us make Clearlake a cleaner, safer community. We offer a remodeled facility, new vehicles (including take home program), on-site gym, updated 911 dispatch center, up-to-date equipment and technology, and comprehensive training and tools to support your success. This recruitment is for lateral, academy graduates or students currently enrolled in a POST Basic Police Academy (including Modular Level 1). If you have not attended a POST academy (Basic Course or Modular Level 1) or completed the Basic Course Waiver process, you will not be considered for this recruitment. Under general supervision to perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases involving public morals and welfare; control traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic regulations; and perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department. Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; check buildings for physical security. Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, related misdemeanors and felony incidents. Collect, process, photograph, and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and related physical evidence. Enforce traffic laws and ordinances, check speed with radar, issue warnings and citations. Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency or congested situations. Conduct traffic accident analyses and general traffic surveys; conduct investigations of serious injury and fatality traffic accidents. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigations of offenses. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention. Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed. Serve writs, warrants, and subpoenas within the department and with outside agencies; remain current on laws and procedures required for processing. Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; testify and present evidence in court. May serve as Field Training Officer as assigned; train new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activities. May conduct a variety of criminal investigations involving crimes against persons and property, child sexual and physical abuse, auto theft, white collar crime, and narcotics; conduct covert and undercover investigations as assigned; gather evidence and prepare cases for prosecution. May serve as Intelligence Officer; gather crime-related intelligence information and conduct background investigations; coordinate information and activities with outside agencies and jurisdictions. May serve as Police Sergeant as assigned; act as Watch Commander; review and approve the reports of other Police Officers. Qualifications and Skills
Skill to: Learn to operate firearms and other modern police equipment; Learn to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment; Operate a motor vehicle. Ability to: Successfully complete POST training entry level for Police Officers; Learn modern police methods, procedures related to patrol, traffic control, and investigation and identifications; Learn law enforcement theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs; Learn recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations; Learn functions and objectives of Federal, State, and other local enforcement agencies; Learn self-defense tactics; Learn, properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations; Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances, particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance, and traffic control; Learn modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques; Learn to gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence; Learn, interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures; Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places; Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports; Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine proper course of action; Act quickly and calmly in emergencies; Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively; Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and administer first aid; Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish, maintain, and foster positive harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes possession of a valid driver’s license, one year of experience working with the public, and completion of a POST Academy (currently enrolled students may apply but can only be appointed upon successful completion of a POST Academy). Additional requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 100 lbs; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, electrical hazards, dust, mechanical hazards, explosive materials and contagious diseases; availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by call.
