Volunteers of America‑Greater New York (VOA‑Greater New York) is an anti‑poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County, serving families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others—including a special education preschool program.

Position Childcare & Recreation Specialist

is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of childcare and recreation activities, classroom operations, and programming appropriate for the client population. The position is located at Victory I, a facility providing comprehensive services and safe, anonymous housing for individuals and their children experiencing domestic violence.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree and one year of relevant experience with a similar population, or high school diploma or GED with at least two years relevant experience.

Candidate’s with experience related to domestic violence are preferred.

Responsibilities

Plan, coordinate, publicize, implement, and facilitate support groups, recreational activities, special events, and holiday programs.

Update and post printed materials and encourage client participation.

Assist in the development and implementation of new programs aimed at enhancing client motivation through socialization and leisure skill development.

Coordinate programs with Case Managers to facilitate enrichment sessions.

Develop contacts with various sources for off‑site activities.

Assist in preparing and submitting written and statistical reports.

Assist in creating an instructional environment that fosters learning and growth.

Assist in classroom activities on a daily basis.

Evaluate student progress on an ongoing basis, maintaining necessary records.

Provide after‑care to clients in the program.
