Police Officers enforce laws and ensure the safety and security of the City of Portland and its citizens. This is accomplished by patrolling assigned areas, responding to emergency situations, completing investigation/incident reports, attending community meetings, patrolling special events, and delivery crime-prevention presentations within the community. May perform other related work as required.

This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. The City verifies all information prior to extending an offer of employment. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.

Salary/Benefits

Annual starting salary of $64,500

$5,000 sign-on incentive, payable 30 days after successfully completing Field Training Officer (FTO) training.

$2,000 moving allowance

$1,500 referral fee to any city employee that recommends an applicant for a Police Officer position and that applicant is successfully hired

Certification Pay for Intermediate, Advanced or Master Peace Officer

The City of Portland offers a generous benefits package that includes paid health, dental, vision, life insurance and disability insurance, paid vacation, sick leave and holidays. Portland is a TMRS City at 7%, 2:1 match. Optional 457, Roth IRA and Cafeteria Plans available.

Qualifications High School graduate or equivalent required. Basic TCOLE certification required. Ability to work varied shifts, after-hour call-outs, during inclement weather, disaster situations, and other emergency incidents or situations required.

Special Requirements Valid Texas Class C Drivers’ License with a good driving record. Must pass a drug screen and physical exam. Must pass a psychological exam. Must pass an extensive background investigation. This position is essential and attendance is mandatory in the event of a storm or disaster.
