Overview of the College and Department Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two‑year institution serving the residents of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and nearby counties. The Department of Police, Safety, and Security cultivates a safe campus environment, deters crime, mitigates injury, and fosters positive relationships with the campus community.

Role Summary Police Officers uphold and enforce Virginia law and college regulations. They serve faculty, staff, students, guests, and the property, providing professional, high‑quality service while maintaining a secure campus.

Responsibilities

Enforce laws, regulations, and college policies on campus and surrounding streets.

Respond to routine, non‑emergency, and emergency calls; render first aid or CPR when necessary.

Conduct investigations of crime, traffic accidents, thefts, and other incidents; prepare written reports.

Apprehend and detain suspects; issue summons; collect evidence; testify in court.

Perform traffic and crowd control; provide directions and general information; assist in special events.

Conduct security checks and building inspections; escort personnel; patrol parking lots and adjacent roadways.

Operate communication equipment and perform dispatch duties as assigned.

Assist in crisis intervention for behavioral health assessment and in emergencies declared by the Governor.

Qualifications & Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s)

Hold an unincumbent and unexpired Virginia (DCJS) law‑enforcement officer certification or obtain it within one year.

Maintain all training and certification requirements annually.

Work an irregular schedule, under varied conditions, at all VPCC campuses.

Thorough knowledge of Virginia laws, college regulations, Title IX, the Clery Act, and campus threat assessment best practices.

Comprehensive knowledge of firearms and non‑lethal equipment usage, care, and safety.

Strong verbal and written communication; proficient use of police equipment; sound judgment and decision‑making; conflict resolution and problem‑solving skills.

Apply, interpret, and enforce laws; perform investigations; maintain superior physical fitness; testify truthfully in legal proceedings.

Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Considerations

Experience in an educational setting or prior work in a college, military, or municipal police department.

Current or former DCJS general or Special Instructor Certification.

Physical and Background Requirements Applicants must pass a physical assessment, mental health assessment, and a comprehensive law‑enforcement background check. Certified weapons qualification and E‑Verify participation are required.
