About Brothers Building A Better Nation (BBABN) Brothers Building A Better Nation (BBABN) is a Newark-based nonprofit organization dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers that impact children, youth, and families. BBABN provides community-centered mentorship, tutoring, wellness, enrichment, and supportive services designed to promote stability, growth, and opportunity.
In addition to Medicaid-funded behavioral health services, BBABN offers non-Medicaid, community-based programming focused on education, mentorship, wellness, and holistic development. BBABN serves only youth and families located in Essex County, New Jersey.
Position Summary The Community Support Specialist (CSS) provides non-clinical, non-Medicaid services to youth and families participating in BBABN programs. This role supports youth development, academic success, wellness, and life skills through structured, strengths-based activities delivered in community settings.
Community Support Specialists may serve in various capacities, including but not limited to:
Youth Mentor
Academic Tutor
Workshop Facilitator
Yoga or Wellness Instructor
Arts, Fitness, or Life-Skills Facilitator
This position is ideal for individuals passionate about community engagement, youth development, education, and holistic wellness.
Key Responsibilities Program & Direct Service Delivery
Facilitate mentorship, tutoring, wellness, or enrichment activities aligned with BBABN program goals
Support youth development through structured, age-appropriate activities
Serve as a positive role model and support youth engagement and participation
Deliver services in community-based settings throughout Essex County (community centers, schools, parks, etc.)
Engagement & Relationship Building
Build positive, supportive relationships with youth and families
Encourage participation, consistency, and goal-setting
Communicate respectfully and professionally with families and staff
Documentation & Accountability
Complete required attendance logs, session summaries, or program documentation
Submit documentation in a timely manner according to BBABN guidelines
Track participation and engagement as required by program funders
Collaboration & Professional Conduct
Collaborate with BBABN program staff and leadership
Participate in orientation, training, or check-ins as required
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and ethical conduct
Adhere to BBABN policies, confidentiality standards, and mandated reporting requirements
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred, depending on role)
Experience working with youth, families, or community groups (professional, volunteer, or lived experience)
Active, clean driver’s license and reliable transportation
Ability to travel throughout Essex County only
Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications (Role-Dependent)
Background in mentoring, tutoring, education, wellness, fitness, yoga, arts, or youth development
Experience facilitating groups or workshops
Certifications relevant to role (e.g., tutoring credentials, yoga certification, coaching license)
Bilingual abilities (preferred but not required)
Compensation & Contractor Status $20–$30 per hour, depending on program, role, and experience This is a 1099 independent contractor position Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and insurance Flexible scheduling based on program needs and availability
Work Environment & Schedule Community-based work within Essex County After-school, evening, and occasional weekend hours may be required Administrative documentation completed remotely
