Job Description Summary
Assume responsibility for adequate staffing and on‑time blood collections.
Monitor workflow to ensure that all shift work is completed, distributing venipuncture/clerk assignments as required.
Assist the supervisor in maintaining personnel records, reviewing orientation material with new employees, teaching/training staff or students, and performing annual competency assessments.
Communicate and document any unusual occurrences or variations from routine operations to the supervisor.
Follow laboratory policy regarding standard precautions, PPE, and proper disposal of bio‑hazardous waste, routine waste, and sharps.
Understand and implement the computer disaster plan as needed.
Maintain a minimum inventory of reagents and supplies to ensure continuous workflow.
Demonstrate proficiency in routine venipuncture, blood culture collection, baby venipuncture, and Blood Bank collation techniques.
Perform duties independently, assessing situations and selecting appropriate actions.
Communicate with nursing units and other medical personnel about delays and concerns.
Participate in special projects and maintain a positive attitude toward departmental policies and employee satisfaction.
Ensure that summary reports are printed and charted daily.
Qualifications
License/Registration/Certification
Completion of a venipuncture or medical assistant training program.
Education
High School Diploma.
Experience
At least 2 years of prior venipuncture experience with competency in all areas of specimen collection.
