Underwriting Manager - Credit Cards

The Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting strategy and credit risk framework for the company’s credit card products. This role is responsible for developing underwriting policies, optimizing approval and pricing strategies, and ensuring portfolio performance aligns with growth and risk objectives in a fast-paced fintech environment.

Key Responsibilities

Own and evolve the underwriting strategy for consumer and/or small business credit card products

Design, implement, and maintain credit policies, decisioning rules, and risk thresholds

Oversee automated underwriting models and credit decision engines (rules-based and ML-driven)

Partner with Data Science to enhance scorecards, risk models, and segmentation strategies

Balance portfolio growth, approval rates, loss performance, and profitability targets

Monitor portfolio performance, delinquency trends, charge-offs, and early warning indicators

Lead credit policy testing, champion/challenger strategies, and continuous optimization

Ensure underwriting practices comply with regulatory requirements (CFPB, Fair Lending, ECOA, FCRA, UDAAP)

Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Fraud, and Operations teams on new product launches

Prepare and present credit performance reporting to executive leadership and investors

Manage and mentor underwriting and credit risk team members

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in underwriting or credit risk within credit cards, fintech, or consumer lending

Deep understanding of credit card underwriting, risk-based pricing, and lifecycle credit management

Experience with alternative data, bureau data, and modern fintech underwriting tools

Strong knowledge of consumer credit regulations and fair lending standards

Proven ability to operate in high-growth, data-driven environments

Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
