$29.89 – $38.99 per hour (collective bargaining agreement)

Responsibilities Fabricates, assembles, repairs, and/or maintains mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities, and equipment. Requires advanced knowledge and skill to perform advanced machinery and bench operations. Works to close tolerances.

Typical Duties

Lays out, plans, and completes all mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with a minimum of supervision.

Sets up and operates own machines as required.

Works from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions or from experience to diagnose apparatus, machine, facility, and equipment troubles.

May assemble complicated mechanical components, or complete models, instruments, apparatus and equipment.

May specialize in maintaining mechanical equipment or apparatus in efficient working order, including some electrical components such as switches and control panels.

May perform necessary electrical maintenance on elevators, hoists, conveyors, and electric motors.

May perform basic and routine level work commonly assigned to other trades (e.g., carpentry or electrical tasks) when necessary.

Performs other duties requiring comparable skill and responsibility as directed.

Supervision Under general supervision of departmental supervisor. No formal supervisory authority exercised.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent educational training.

Ability to read, write, and interpret English; to use shop mathematics, charts, tables, and handbook formulas.

Ability to read and interpret specialized drawings and diagrams.

Completion of an approved apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of formal training and experience.

Minimum of 5–6 years of total experience including apprenticeship time.

Must use and/or wear safety equipment specified by the University and follow safe work practices at all times as prescribed by OSHA or other regulations.

Depending on functional area, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Willingness to work long and irregular hours when assigned, and be reachable by telephone for call‑in duty.
