Early Career Mechanical Engineer – Buildings
Location: Richmond, VA – expected start: Summer 2026 (individual start date flexible).
Responsibilities
Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and computer-generated reports for project development, design, and construction.
Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry‑level technical assistance on design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to ensure proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.
Assist with verifying site characteristics and providing technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
Generate accurate and concise documentation and specifications using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work‑site logs.
Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures, including location data, documentation, engineering studies, surveys, and construction.
Complete required training on assigned tasks.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
0 to 1 year of relevant post‑education experience.
Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
Self‑leadership with attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Familiarity with discipline‑specific design software (e.g., AutoCAD, CAM, Revit).
Strong technical writing, analytical, and communication skills.
Detail‑oriented with an emphasis on quality work products.
Immediate eligibility to work in the United States.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduation in May 2026.
Engineer in Training certification.
Prior internship related to engineering discipline.
Active membership in a local professional practice organization.
