Overview The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking Civil Engineers for the Roadway Design and the Structures Sections of the Project Delivery Bureau. A position in Roadway Design involves drafting plans, specifications, and calculating quantities for roadway reconstruction, small culvert rehabilitation, and ledge/slope stabilization. A position in Structures focuses on development of project plans, specifications, and estimates for projects that include bridges/pipes/retaining walls and more across the state. The ideal candidate should have an interest in foundations, roadway, traffic, or structural bridge design; cost estimating; strong computer design and 3D modeling skills; the ability to work on multiple projects at a given time; and strong communication skills.

This position will be located in Barre City Place in Barre, VT with an opportunity to telework.

Common Job Duties

Scoping Analysis – evaluating initial design concepts, collaborating with stakeholders to meet regulatory requirements and standards, providing cost estimates, and identifying potential risks and challenges.

Roadway Design – designing horizontal alignments and vertical profiles of State roadways, super‑elevation, drainage, stormwater, and erosion protection.

Bridge Design – designing and analyzing structural elements of bridges, including superstructures, substructures, foundations, and retaining walls, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

CADD Software – utilizing CADD software to create detailed digital models, visualize designs in 3D, make precise measurements, and analyze design options.

Collaboration – working with multidisciplinary teams (architects, civil engineers, environmental engineers, transportation planners) to integrate designs.

Documentation – preparing technical reports, drawings, specifications, and other documentation related to design, analysis, and construction activities.

Environmental Factors Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered regularly.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) years of engineering experience.

OR

Associate’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND four (4) years of engineering experience, INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.
