Introduction City of Scottsdale Police Officers are responsible for protecting life and property, preventing, deterring, and investigating crime, enforcing laws, and responding to citizen requests through community policing strategies.

A Police Officer Recruit is an entry‑level position prior to becoming a certified Police Officer. The role includes formal, structured training at a police academy and customized departmental training classes and a field training program arranged by in‑service trainers.

Compensation The starting salary for a Police Officer Recruit (Trainee) is $36.93/hour ($76,814.40/Annual). This position is part of the Police Step Pay Plan. Recruits who successfully complete the academy and promotional process will be promoted to the first step of the Police Officer Step Plan, earning $38.78/hour ($80,662.40/Annual) and will progress through the steps on the anniversary date of their promotion based on performance.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.

Must be 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application.

Must be a United States Citizen.

Licensing, Certifications And Other Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 36 months prior to the start date. Out‑of‑state licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to Arizona.

Obtain and maintain AZPOST Certification.

Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale must reside in Arizona during active employment, regardless of remote work approval.

Essential Functions Performed duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area within a department(s) which may include, but are not limited to:

Law enforcement patrol activities.

Operate a motor vehicle, observe and monitor the public, pursue and stop offenders, and employ necessary force, including deadly force.

Issue citations, make arrests, search persons, places, and objects; seize and impound property and evidence; transport arrested persons and property.

Mediator disputes; conduct crowd and riot control activities.

Conduct law enforcement investigations.

Protect crime and traffic accident scenes; conduct face‑to‑face and phone interviews; record and preserve evidence; measure and diagram scenes; prepare detailed written reports; enter data into a computerized records management system; present testimony and evidence in court.

Respond to citizen requests for assistance at fires, accidents, and crime scenes; administer first aid; assist distressed motorists; direct traffic; move persons, vehicles, and other property.

Pre‑employment Requirements

Pass a post‑offer drug screen prior to the start date.

Pass an Audiogram Test as part of the medical examination.

Pass a Visual/Ishihara Screening Test as part of the medical examination.

Pass an AZPOST Medical Exam as part of the conditional job offer.

Pass a psychological evaluation as part of the conditional job offer.

Physical agility to pursue offenders on foot and subdue resisting offenders using necessary force.

Lift and move up to 160 pounds for long distances with or without assistance.

Visually distinguish full color spectrum.

Operate law enforcement tools such as handguns, batons, and other weapons.

Operate motor vehicle, computer equipment, and two‑way radio with constant vigilance.

Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when needed.

Travel to/from various locations.

Work overtime as required.

Work a variety of scheduled shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Selection Process

Initial application screening

Background investigation, physical and written exam, and oral board interview

Written exam not required for applicants with at least 60 college credits or a degree

Final selection contingent upon background check including fingerprinting, criminal background screening, motor vehicle department records check, and polygraph

Successful candidates receive a post‑offer drug test, AZPOST medical exam, and psychological evaluation.
