Job Summary As a sworn Peace Officer, this position creates and maintains a safe and secure environment for community members to pursue higher education, visit guests, and protect campus property. This position performs all duties expected of a sworn police officer across the full range of public‑safety enforcement, security, and campus services. It is a designated position of trust, typically reporting directly to a Division Sergeant or Lieutenant. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a comprehensive background and fitness assessment and attainment of a valid, unrestricted Georgia driver’s license.
Responsibilities
Responds (vehicle or by foot) to reported incidents and emergencies; conducts preliminary and follow‑up investigations of crimes, traffic offenses, parking violations, and policy infractions; intervenes and interviews individuals, or conducts surveillance to investigate causes of accidents, incidents, disturbances, unlawful acts, traffic violations, and policy infractions; apprehends and prosecutes criminal offenders; prepares reports for legal prosecution or referral to appropriate campus service; accurately inputs record management data; prepares affidavits for arrest and search warrants; provides victim and witness assistance; secures and investigates incident scenes to identify, collect and preserve evidence; arrests and transports offenders; attends and testifies in court, grand jury, and college proceedings as needed.
Provides community‑oriented police services by working with employees, students or visitors to address safety, crime, crime‑prevention, and campus community issues; responds to injured or sick persons or persons possibly in critical, life‑threatening circumstances to render first aid or perform other lifesaving acts; coordinates responses of emergency rescue units; evacuates or limits access of persons from potentially dangerous locations; performs other duties as dictated by time, place, circumstances, or supervisor directive.
Physically controls violent persons (when needed) and exercises good judgment, discretion, and self‑control in the discharge of duties on a college campus without immediate supervision; maintains confidentiality of all printed, digital, or computerized information available during employment.
Directs traffic on campus property or roadways using traffic vests, flashlights, and barricades; may push disabled vehicles from traffic accidents.
Duties are performed under general supervision and may be carried out in hazardous conditions, inclement weather, and various lighting conditions; may provide mutual aid to other agencies.
Supervisors routinely monitor activities via observations, camera recordings, or radio; review and correct reports; hold informational discussions; inspect uniforms, equipment, and vehicles; evaluate performance.
Scheduled hours may vary (day, evening, or morning shift) and may include weekends and holidays; sudden changes or special events may necessitate 10 or 12‑hour shifts; may perform limited duties normally assigned to a sergeant or campus‑level officer as needed.
Duties and responsibilities vary by division, unit, or program of Public Security.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Twenty‑one years of age or older.
GAPOST certified peace officer in good standing (current GAPOST professional profile required).
Applicants certified as a law‑enforcement officer by an agency other than GAPOST may be considered; such applicants must submit professional certification(s) and an official certification profile.
All certified applicants must demonstrate good standing, unblemished by prior termination, resignation, investigation, suspension, probation, unpaid fees, or delinquent training requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently employed in good standing, or have been employed in good standing in the last twelve months as a peace officer by a GAPOST‑recognized agency.
Associate degree or higher.
Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures, with the ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.
Knowledge of the terminology and lawful applications of law‑enforcement procedures, traffic law, criminal law, and criminal procedure law.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Effectively manage situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment; exercise controlled discretion; mediate difficult situations.
Observe or monitor objects and people to determine compliance with safety standards and accurately recall details.
Maintain moral integrity; interpret and apply laws and college policies; follow precedent; remain calm in emergencies; analyze problems; maintain confidentiality.
Understand basic principles and practices of a professional law‑enforcement officer.
Knowledge of federal, state, and city criminal, traffic, and procedural laws, ordinances, and court decisions.
Knowledge of lawful use and safe practices of firearms and less lethal weapons.
Produce written documents with clear organization and proper sentence construction; efficiently complete assigned work.
Perform CPR, AED, stop‑the‑bleed practices, administer naloxone; safe firearms use; vehicle and equipment operation.
Establish effective relationships with the community and students of varying ages to respond to incidents.
Communicate effectively by phone, radios, and in person.
Work cooperatively with departments and agencies; present outreach and crime‑prevention programming; maintain professional relationships.
Organize, prioritize, and complete assigned work; learn radio codes and terminology.
Work assigned shift hours and attend court and provide testimony when required.
Operate basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Internet) and police record systems.
