Job Summary We are seeking a motivated Associate Underwriter to join our Single Product Professional Indemnity (SPPI) underwriting team. This role is focused on underwriting a single specialty product line and is designed for an early- to mid-career underwriting professional seeking to deepen technical expertise in Professional Indemnity and Financial Lines business.
The Associate Underwriter will support senior underwriters in underwriting new and renewal business, developing risk assessments, managing broker relationships, and executing underwriting strategies aligned with profitability and growth objectives. Over time, the role offers progressively increased underwriting authority and account ownership based on experience and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Support underwriting of new and renewal SPPI business in accordance with underwriting guidelines, appetite, and delegated authority
Assist in evaluating complex professional risk exposures, including review of business operations, contractual obligations, loss history, and financial strength
Analyze insurance applications, client financials, claims trends, and industry-specific risk factors to support pricing and coverage decisions
Review contracts and engagement terms to assess professional liability exposures, limits adequacy, and coverage structure
Prepare underwriting analyses, account summaries, and recommendations for senior underwriter review
Support renewal strategy development, including exposure changes, pricing adjustments, and coverage enhancements
Collaborate closely with brokers to obtain underwriting information, respond to submissions, and support negotiation of terms
Coordinate with Claims, Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, and Reinsurance partners to support underwriting decisions and portfolio performance
Maintain accurate and compliant underwriting files and documentation in line with internal standards and regulatory requirements
Monitor portfolio metrics such as loss ratios, rate adequacy, retention, and growth trends, and assist with reporting
Stay current on Professional Indemnity and Financial Lines market trends, emerging risks, and regulatory developments
Contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting processes, tools, and best practices
Progressively assume greater responsibility and underwriting authority as experience and capability develop
Qualifications
1-3 years of experience in Commercial Insurance underwriting or a related insurance role
Exposure to Professional Indemnity, Financial Lines, Specialty Casualty, or Management Liability preferred
Foundational understanding of commercial P&C policy forms and underwriting principles
Strong analytical, organizational, and critical-thinking skills with high attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interacting with brokers and internal stakeholders
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis tools
Professional designations (AU, CPCU, ARM) or progress toward them strongly preferred
Compensation The base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000, plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, education, and geographic location.
