About the role Techno is expanding its field inspection team and is seeking a skilled
Blasting & Underground Construction Inspector
to support a high-profile transportation infrastructure program in Baltimore, Maryland. This is a long-term field assignment supporting complex underground construction activities tied to a major rail corridor improvement effort.
The initial assignment is expected to run approximately four months, with a strong possibility of extension based on project needs. The role is full-time and field-based, with a consistent on-site presence required.
In this position, you will be embedded in the field, serving as a critical quality and compliance resource during excavation and blasting operations. You will work closely with contractors, engineers, and inspection staff to help ensure underground work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved plans.
What you'll do
Observe and verify controlled blasting activities from planning through execution, including drilling patterns, explosive placement, protective measures, and post-blast conditions
Monitor underground excavation progress, including muck removal, rock stabilization, ground support installation, and structural elements
Confirm that construction activities align with safety requirements, approved methodologies, and technical specifications
Review and validate blast documentation such as shot logs, vibration data, and monitoring reports
Maintain detailed daily inspection records and clearly document deficiencies or deviations from approved plans
Coordinate with contractors, field engineers, geotechnical staff, and project leadership to resolve construction or safety concerns
Inspect related civil and structural components, including concrete placement, liners, waterproofing, and support systems
Participate in field meetings and provide real-time insight on blasting progress, sequencing, and constructability considerations
Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience inspecting underground construction with direct involvement in blasting operations
Strong working knowledge of controlled blasting practices, tunnel excavation techniques, and underground support systems
Experience interpreting construction drawings, blasting plans, and technical specifications
Familiarity with vibration monitoring, blast impact controls, and environmental mitigation measures
Prior experience on large‑scale rail, tunnel, or underground infrastructure projects strongly preferred
Blasting-related certifications or equivalent demonstrated field experience are a plus
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred; additional underground or blasting safety training is a plus
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly document field conditions
Ability to work extended hours, including nights or weekends, and perform duties in active underground environments
Bonus:
Prior experience working on projects for major transportation agencies, including the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) or similar agencies, is a plus
