Position Overview The

Hillman/Tailman

is an essential member of the pipe crew, working closely with the

Pipelayer

and

Equipment Operator

to safely and efficiently install underground utility systems such as

storm drains, sanitary sewers, and waterlines .

The Hillman/Tailman assists with trench preparation, pipe alignment, grade checks, setting structures, and backfill operations. This position requires strong teamwork, attention to detail, and adherence to all safety standards.

Key Responsibilities Pipe Installation Support

Assist the

Pipelayer

in placing and aligning RCP, HDPE, and PVC pipe sections to grade and line.

Maintain proper pipe jointing, gasket installation, and lubrication as directed.

Check grades and elevations using laser or level rods under the direction of the Foreman.

Guide the operator during trench excavation, pipe placement, and backfill to ensure accuracy and safety.

Operate hand tools, levels, and other small equipment as needed.

Trench & Worksite Safety

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized trench and work area at all times.

Set up and remove trench boxes, shoring, and safety barriers as instructed.

Follow all

OSHA trenching and excavation standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P) .

Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Crew Coordination

Communicate clearly with the

Foreman, Operator, and Pipelayer

to support efficient workflow.

Follow instructions accurately and assist in positioning materials, tools, and equipment.

Help with setup, relocation, and cleanup of the job site daily.

Equipment & Material Handling

Signal and guide heavy equipment operators when moving pipe, structures, or materials.

Load, unload, and organize pipe, fittings, and bedding material.

Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of tools and small equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum

1–2 years of experience

in underground utility or pipe crew work preferred (will train qualified candidates).

Familiarity with trench safety, grade checking, and pipe installation methods.

Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and performing manual labor.

Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to job sites.

Strong teamwork, communication, and safety-first mindset.
