Overview
Purpose:
The Telecommunications Technician 2 is responsible for planning, layout, and complete installation of new commercial and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. The candidate must have extensive experience with the installation, termination, and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments. Hospital or Airport installs will be a plus. Responsibilities: Installation of video and data cable with Cat 5E, Cat 6, and fiber cable. Terminating and testing of horizontal copper (Cat 5, Cat 6). Termination of fiber and riser cable. Installation of patch panels, cable trays, racks, and conduit. Labeling and testing horizontal cable. Installation of backbone and riser cable (copper & fiber). Assist in OSP (outside plant) installations and site grounding. Pulling cables, installing prefab assemblies, and assisting with grounding and conduit layouts. Participate in job site cleanup and maintain a clean work environment. Install Wiremold, Sleeves, Panduit, ENT, and junction boxes. Operate specialized equipment such as Tugger (certification required). Assist with calculating wire load and conduit sizing. Troubleshoot and fix Cat 5, 5E, and 6 cable problems. Knowledge of fiber termination connectors and fiber optic cables. Train and supervise apprentices, focusing on safety, quality, and schedule adherence. Ensure personal protective equipment is worn at all times; employees must provide their own hand tools. Qualifications: 4+ years experience in the commercial communications industry with a high school diploma or GED, or 2-3 years with an Associate degree. Valid driver's license for equipment operation. Experience with room build-outs, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic termination, and interpreting drawings and as-builts. Familiarity with BlueBeam, Fluke Versiv, MS Office Word and Excel. Knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper installation and termination procedures. Abilities: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly, demonstrate physical strength and stamina, and follow safety protocols. Work at heights up to 60 feet, climb ladders, scaffolds, and aerial lifts. Perform physical tasks including walking, climbing, lifting, and reaching overhead. Good vision (corrected if necessary), color perception, and communication skills in English. Recognize potential problems and apply general rules to specific issues.
