Position Overview
The
Grading / Earthwork Foreman
will supervise and coordinate field operations for all grading, excavation, and embankment activities on the
Vicksburg National Military Park Stabilization and Road Repair Project .
This position requires strong technical knowledge of
earthwork, slope stabilization, drainage installation, and roadway subgrade preparation . The Foreman will ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project plans, specifications, and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities Field Supervision & Planning
Lead, direct, and coordinate daily operations of grading and earthwork crews, including equipment operators, laborers, and truck drivers.
Interpret construction drawings, grades, and staking information to ensure correct lines, slopes, and elevations.
Plan and assign daily tasks to maintain schedule and production goals.
Coordinate closely with surveyors, project engineers, and QC personnel to verify grades and tolerances.
Monitor cut/fill operations, compaction, and material placement for quality and accuracy.
Earthwork & Grading Operations
Supervise all
excavation, embankment, and grading
activities for roadway reconstruction and slope stabilization.
Ensure proper use of materials such as
geogrid, aggregate base, gabions, and backfill
per project specifications.
Oversee
drainage installation , subgrade compaction, and final grading for asphalt or concrete pavement.
Manage import/export of fill material and verify quantities with project controls.
Maintain compliance with
NPS environmental standards
and erosion/sediment control measures.
Safety & Compliance
Conduct daily toolbox talks and enforce
OSHA and company safety protocols , especially regarding excavation, equipment operation, and slope work.
Ensure trenching, working near slopes, and access points meet safety requirements.
Inspect equipment daily and report maintenance needs.
Promote a positive safety culture and accountability within the crew.
Quality & Documentation
Verify that grading operations meet plan lines, elevations, and compaction requirements.
Work with the
Quality Control Manager
to document test results and inspection reports.
Maintain accurate daily logs, equipment hours, material quantities, and crew timesheets.
Identify potential issues early and communicate solutions to the Superintendent or Project Manager.
Leadership & Coordination
Motivate and lead crews to achieve high productivity and quality workmanship.
Coordinate with
drainage, paving, and structure foremen
to ensure smooth sequencing of work.
Communicate clearly with inspectors, subcontractors, and management.
Qualifications
Minimum
5 years of experience
supervising grading, excavation, or earthwork operations on civil or DOT projects.
Strong understanding of
earthwork construction, slope stabilization, and drainage systems.
Ability to read and interpret
civil drawings, cross-sections, and grade stakes.
Proficiency with
GPS, laser, or total station control systems
(Trimble or Topcon preferred).
Experience managing crews in
federal or environmental-sensitive projects
preferred.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
