1 day ago Be among the first 25 applicants The Providence Eye (pvdeye.org), a digital news organization based in Providence, RI, seeks a full-time multimedia reporter to join our newsroom. Founded in 2023, The Providence Eye aims to close the gap in local reporting left by corporate media consolidation and modern shifts in news consumption. We aim to provide quality community journalism that speaks to issues in each of Providence’s diverse neighborhoods, from Wanskuck to Wayland to Washington Park. We believe that Providence is a unique city with a rich history, present, and future. We aim to be a reliable source of both practical civic information for residents, as well as a source for in-depth reporting about the issues that affect Providentians most urgently, equipping them with the context they need to be engaged citizens. Please be advised that this position requires that the candidate live in Rhode Island and reside within a commutable distance to Providence, RI. What you’ll do… Report long- and short-form pieces that contextualize topics that are timely, impactful, and/or undercovered in Providence At least one feature article per week and shorter articles, as assigned Report on local solutions to long-standing issues that affect those who live in cities (i.e. housing, education, transportation, environment, etc) Help grow the coverage of an emerging newsroom, by building on the strengths of existing Eye reportage – schools, arts – while also creating new areas of distinction. Build trust and cultivate sources within the Providence community — both civilians and representatives of various institutions (i.e. City officials, nonprofit representatives, teachers, other news partners, etc) Generate and pitch article ideas Take photos to accompany articles Shoot video content that helps to accompany and amplify reporting across social media Collaborate with team to create social media content promoting The PVD Eye’s original reporting What we offer… Unique opportunity to help build a local news outlet. Ability to work remotely in RI while not engaging in-person while on assignment. $50,000 salary We put 3% salary toward a SIMPLE IRA that vests immediately without a match requirement from you. You’re a good fit if you have… A strong interest in research and writing, with an emphasis on writing effectively and communicating in a meaningful way with a wide audience A commitment to journalistic ethics, as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists. An eagerness to report on stories as they are happening, balanced by a steadfastness to balance the importance of accuracy in reporting. A love of Providence and those who live here. Lived experience in the city and/or a willingness to immerse yourself in the city’s communities, events, and culture. A sensitivity to the challenges and opportunities of representing multiple perspectives within a city with vast demographic diversity — and a commitment to buoy the stories of those who have been historically omitted from mainstream news coverage. An ability to collaborate and work closely within our small but mighty team. A knowledge of social media and modern ways of sharing information. Home location in or around Providence, with the ability to reliably attend local happenings in the city with reasonable accommodations. Spanish fluency is preferred.
