Position Overview As a Petco Certified Dog Trainer, you’ll enhance the bond between pet parents and their dogs, guiding them with modern, positive‑reinforcement training techniques. You’ll provide one‑on‑one sessions, group classes, and tailored training plans while also offering information on nutrition, services, and supplies.
Position Responsibilities
Conduct training sessions—individual and group—while maintaining accurate records of progress, feedback, and sales of related products.
Provide excellent guest service by recommending merchandise and services that meet each guest’s needs.
Collaborate with grooming and veterinary teams to offer a holistic whole‑health experience.
Maintain store standards: product stocking, pricing, merchandising, and cash handling.
Support store performance goals through related duties and special projects as directed.
Adhere to operational guidelines, safety protocols, and compliance requirements.
Contribute to a culture of teamwork, inclusion, and positivity.
Dog Trainer Core Responsibilities Provide World‑Class Dog Training Services
Complete Petco’s 6‑week Dog Trainer Instructor Program and all learning modules.
Recommend and sell training classes, supplies, and services to ensure a successful learning experience.
Sell appropriately while following confidentiality and professionalism standards.
Collaborate with grooming and veterinary teams for integrative care.
Apply ongoing training to maintain expertise.
Provide 360‑Degree Solutions for Petco Guests
Engage guests by recommending products and services that match their identified needs.
Identify opportunities for future business through in‑store and digital platforms.
Demonstrate knowledge of animal health, welfare, and handling.
Support in‑store merchandising, pricing, and display to enhance the shopping experience.
Process cash transactions and support the omni‑channel shopping experience.
Adhere to all operational policies and contribute to a positive work culture.
Optionally take on additional duties and special projects.
Other Essential Duties
Utilize selling behaviors to create an outstanding guest experience.
Champion safety protocols for partners, guests, and pets.
Serve as a collaborative team member focused on pet wellness.
Engage in professional development and career advancement opportunities.
Certification Requirements
Stage 1: Complete the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) – a six‑week, instructor‑led curriculum.
Stage 2: Run and grow the dog training business in a Petco location under national marketing and internal resource support.
Stage 3: Finish the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.
Accelerated training may be available for qualified candidates with prior experience.
Basic Qualifications
Passionate about animal care and pet welfare.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficient with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds.
Organized, with strong multitasking capabilities.
Flexible to work weekends, evenings, holidays.
Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lb.
Computer literacy for managing training records and communication.
